English, Media or Film at uni

I am unsure what to choose for university applications. I am planning to apply for top universities in each field, but I am unsure which undergraduate degree would be of most use to me. For film production courses I do not like any of the CILECT unis (sorry... but I would consider doing a postgrad course at NFTS ).

I want to go into media/film industries, but I also wouldn't mind doing something in English (like proofreading or publishing), so I am not entirely set on a career.

Go to some Uni Open Days coming up in May/June - book now as places go early - and listen to the subject presentations for both subjects. Then decide which actually interests you the most.

Many Film Production courses will include elements of writing -
BA (Hons) Film Production | University of Salford
Or there are more theoretical 'Film Studies' and English courses -
English and Film Studies | Courses | Queen's University Belfast

Hi there,

It's great to hear that you're considering York!

I'd definitely recommend visiting us at an open day to find out more about our courses in the School of Arts and Creative Technologies. I think the courses you would be most interested in are Film and Television Production and Theatre, Writing, Directing and Performance.

You can also check out our Student Vlogs channel to find out more about life at York and student experiences of the courses I've mentioned.

I hope this helps! - Hannah 😀

Hi,
My name is Nally, and I am a second-year student in Media, Communications and Sociology at City St George’s, University of London. Although I have no experience in the English or Film degrees, but I can help you by giving some helpful insights about my Media course.

My Media and Communications course is a broad degree. It covers media theory, digital platforms, PR, marketing, and even elements of journalism, so it does not limit you to just one career path. You will be able to develop strong writing, research, and critical thinking skills that are useful for various fields like screenwriting, advertising, branding and social media strategy. Media course will open doors for various career opportunities such as PR, marketing, publishing, digital content, and more.

My school offers a BA (Hons) Media Production course, from examining trends in media content to enhancing practical skills such as camerawork, audio recording and video editing. You can also find more information about the course here: https://www.citystgeorges.ac.uk/prospective-students/courses/undergraduate/media-production#accordion502079-header2

If you’re also considering English, this path can lead to great careers in writing, editing, publishing or even content creation. This course will equip you with strong writing skills, analytical thinking skills and critical skills.

Here are some suggestions for you:

Think about your strengths and interests

Go to different open days and explore different courses by reading the module specifications, and talking with student ambassadors, alumni

I hope my answer helps!

Hey sleepandtime, 👋

It's great to hear you are considering a course in arts, media and english!

The great thing about the English Literature courses at Sheffield is that they encompass all of the above! 😀

I did my BA, MA and now I'm doing my PhD all in English Literature and all at the University of Sheffield because there is so much choice. You get a lot of optional modules each year of undergraduate too so it's like designing a course tailor-made for you!

For me, I stuck mostly to literature, creative writing and some theatre modules at undergraduate but then I decided I want to move more into film studies at MA so I did a range of modules on film and literature, as well as creative writing poetry. Now my PhD focuses mainly on contemporary world cinema! 😄

There are lots of modules across the media and arts you can choose from (even at undergraduate level). Some options include 'Research topics in Theatre and Film'; 'Experiments in Interactive Digital Narrative'; 'The Art and Politics of Hip Hop'; and 'Introduction to Cinema'. (Amongst many more!) 🎬️

Here is the link to view the course page and the range of modules you can choose from.

Please let me know if you have any questions about studying in Sheffield or this course in particular and I will be more than happy to help! 😀

All best wishes,
Phoebe
