Hello Sim2k,

I'm not a GEM student, but I have been a University of Chester student for the last 5 years and having lived in Chester most of my life I know the city pretty well too, so hopefully I can give you a bit of information in this respect.

First of all, I'll talk about the University itself. It is a super place to study. All of the staff are really supportive in every department and area of the university, the staff all have a main priority of helping the students have the best experience of university possible and go on to succeed and attain the best outcome to the degree that they are capable of - the university brings out the best in all its students. All of the academic departments have fabulous tutors who are knowledgeable and supportive and really encourage students. They all have a passion for their subject and want their students to share it too. As well as the academic departments there is an academic skills team who are always available to help with everything connected to your studies - they offer one to one appointments, group sessions, host a podcast and provide information from time management, note taking skills, reading for research advice to maths and statistics help, the list is endless. Our library is really great and there is a subject librarian available to help with research for your specific subject which is really invaluable at times. The careers and employability team are full of ideas to help you find work during your time at university, and also once you graduate and as a Chester University alumni you have their help, for free for life!
Aside from academia, the university has a really vibrant societies scene. There are loads of clubs and societies available and there is bound to be at least one for you to join full of like minded students. If you prefer to join sports teams, we have a great athletics union too so there is loads to be involved in.
The accommodation at Chester University is mostly on the main campus, Exton Park, and the rooms are all really modern and contain everything you need. You can choose a catered or self catered room, but even if you go for the self catered option, you can eat on campus in one of the many catering outlets.

So the city, well, Chester city is only 15 minutes walk from the main campus and although it's small compared to some cities, it really does contain everything! There is a vast choice of global cuisine if you want to eat out, these range from small, independent restaurants and bistros, to larger chains. You will also find loads of cafes and coffee shops. The city has 2 cinemas, Storyhouse - a theatre and library space, where we can also study as University students, a deli market and all the high street shops. If history is your thing, you will find masses of rich history in the city - from the Romans, to the Tudors, the nineteenth century and right up to modern day. And the city centre caters for sports too with a gym and a race course. If you just want to go for a walk you can easily reach the parks and green spaces.

Public transport is really good here too. The rail network can take you everywhere with regular trains to Manchester and Liverpool as well as London and Edinburgh. The city is close to major road networks too.

Personally I think Chester University and the wider area of the city is absolutely brilliant, but why don't you come and visit at our next open day on 21 June? Here is the link to the booking information: https://www.chester.ac.uk/study/visit-us/open-days/

Hopefully we will see you soon

Hi Sim2K,

That's brilliant, I'm sure you will love the Chester and its University, it really is a great place to live and study. As I mentioned in my previous reply, the link to book onto the Open Day is https://www.chester.ac.uk/study/visit-us/open-days/. This link also tells you how to apply for a travel bursary towards any costs that you accrue travelling to Chester for the Open Day. I'm not sure if this is something that may apply to you, but it might be worth a look :flower2:

I'm really pleased that you are considering Chester and we will look forward to welcoming you to the University on the Open Day, in the meantime if there is anything else you would like to know, please feel free to contact me again. Alternatively, you may want to reach out to one of the GEM students who are currently studying at Chester via our chat to a student page https://www.chester.ac.uk/study/chat-to-student/

I hope this helps,
Jess
