Study abroad

Once accepted to uni and if I decide to do a year abroad could I choose what uni I want to go to or do I have go to a partner one? Because I was wondering could I find funding and ask the uni I end up going to to let me study there for a year?

Hi,
I studied abroad last year and had to choose one of my university's partner institutions. Based on this and my friend's experiences at other universities, this seems to be standard practise. However, some universities could have more flexible policies, so I’d recommend checking the specific study abroad requirements of the universities that you’re interested in.

Hi there,

In my experience, I only started planning my year abroad in my second year (went away in my third). I applied through ISEP, where I was able to choose and apply to up to 10 universities (we have partnership universities too, but this gave me hundreds of more options!). I was then placed at my 'best fit' by ISEP themselves based on my list and rankings, and that is where I ended up going.

It may differ depending on which UK university you are going to, but I was able to still receive tuition and maintenance loans as usual. You may also be eligible for additional funding, such as from the Turing Scheme or scholarships.

It would definitely be worth contacting the study abroad team at the university you are interested in to learn more, as they can provide you with accurate information for what your experience will likely be.

I hope this helps,

Hello there!

That is a great question!
I have actually done a study abroad myself. I spent a semester at a partner university of Coventry University, and it was honestly one of the best parts of my degree.
When it comes to studying abroad, most universities (including Coventry) have a list of partner institutions that you can choose from. These are schools they have made official agreements with, which means things like credit transfers, academic support, and visas are all much easier to manage.

You usually can’t pick just any university in the world and ask to go there independently, because universities need to have systems in place to support you, but don’t worry. For example Coventry University has a wide network of international partner universities. You can study abroad for a semester or a whole year, and you will still be considered a Coventry student during that time.

Another great thing is that Coventry University offers funding and support for students who take part in these mobility programmes.
So not only do you get to experience another country and education system, but there’s financial help available too.
Definitely something worth looking into when you apply!
I highly recommend it!

I hope this helps!
All the best!
