Hey,

If you're looking for details about the work placement on the Software Engineering course at Glasgow Uni, the best place to start is by checking the official course page or reaching out to the department. Some universities offer placements as an optional year, while others have them built into the degree structure, so it’s worth confirming how it works specifically for your course.

It’s also a good idea to see what kind of companies the university has links with and whether they help with securing placements or if it’s something students need to arrange themselves. Some universities have dedicated career services or industry partnerships, which can make it easier to find placements with well-known tech firms. If you’re unsure, reaching out to past or current students in Glasgow Uni's computing societies or on LinkedIn might give you a better idea of what to expect.

Most of the time, placements years for computer science and software engineering students are paid. However, this does depend on the role you ultimately get. If you haven’t already, try speaking with your lecturers or academic advisors to see how placements fit into the course structure and what support is available. They can give guidance on application timelines and whether the university offers any additional funding or assistance for placement students.

Hope that helps! 😊

Hi there,

If you're referring to a Placement Year (an optional year between the 2nd and 3rd year, often called a "sandwich year"), then yes it’s typically a paid position, essentially a real job with a real salary. I'm currently doing a placement myself, so I’m speaking from personal experience

If you meant something different by "Work Placement," it’s best to check directly with the university. The University of Glasgow offers a “Chat to our students” feature on their website it’s a great way to connect with current students: https://www.gla.ac.uk/undergraduate/degrees/softwareengineering/#

And if you have specific questions, you can also contact the University of Glasgow's admissions enquiries team here: https://www.gla.ac.uk/study/enquire/

Also feel free to have a look at our courses in Software Engineering: https://www.dmu.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate-courses/software-engineering-bsc-degree/software-engineering-bsc-degree.aspx . It is always great to have a backup.

Take care,
