Lancaster politics course question

Do you have to apply for the year abroad on ucas or do you apply when your already on the course, same goes for work placement year because I later saw the work placement was on ucas but not the year abroad when I checked after I'd already applied. Is it different for different politics courses because mine is Politics, IR and Econ? Also if you don't have to apply before hand, is it a selection process and if so what kind of process is that, what can i do to improve my chances of being selected?

Hello @helloyesilizzie

I believe that if you are wanting to do a programme with Study Abroad, you usually enrol for this course in your UCAS application. I actually completed a Study Abroad, however I did not apply for a Study Abroad course on my UCAS, instead I received an email in 2nd year asking if I would like the opportunity to study abroad and find out more information, so I responded saying yes and the rest is history! I would really encourage you to reach out to our admissions team to get a concrete answer to your question as I don't want you missing out on any opportunities. The enquiry form can be found HERE.

In answer to your second question about the process, I can give you some insight from my experience, however this may vary course to course so please bear that in mind. I received a list of universities from Europe, America and Australia that I could apply to. You then get the option to apply to five universities of your choice. In substantiating your choices for where you would like to study, you have to write a motivational essay; you can mention why one university is your first choice over the other, so for example, I mentioned how the cost of living in my first choice most aligned with my budget, what experiences I believe I would make use of in this country, why I like that university, how this country would ensure I have the best study abroad experience etc.

I believe they do their best to ensure you're allocated to your top choice, however, if this option is really popular then I think they prioritise the student with the highest grades. In my experience you were only allocated one option out of the ones you shortlisted and if you were unhappy with your option and therefore wanted to reject the offer, then you would not have the ability to choose another one of your other options.

There is a global experiences team that help facilitate your whole application process so there are ample options for support.

I hope that has given you some insight into the whole experience, however, please remember that this is just my experience so procedures may have changed since my application in 2022/23 and they may vary faculty to faculty.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to let me know!
