Hello Anonymous #1,

Have you tried reaching out to your student support services or personal tutor and asking them for advice on what to do? I would definitely recommend asking them for advice or if you have a mentor, then you could talk to them as well.

And is there any particular reason why you dislike your lecturer?

With regards to finding people to talk to, I’m not very social myself however, you could try joining societies, attending any on-campus events, see if your course does regular meet-ups etc. These can be great ways to meet new people who might have similar interests to you.

Also, at end of the day, you are paying a lot of money for your education so you should make it count in my opinion.

Hi there,

This time of year can get really hard, especially when you are struggling to find motivation. I completely understand how you feel and I always start to feel like this when it gets around this time of year!

Here are my best tips to help keep motivated and get your work done:

Try and make a schedule at the start of each week to keep yourself on track. Write down everything you need to do that week, including uni work, work and fun things too and then try and keep to this schedule as best you can. This way you can see when you have time to do your work and it will feel more manageable.

Again, to keep it more manageable one tip I like to do is to just keep things to small chunks at a time. Try not to schedule too many things for each day as it can feel really demotivating if you don't get everything you are supposed to done. Keep things to small tasks and it will feel so much more motivating when you get to tick things off your list.

If you have any questions, try and ask your lecturers as soon as you can. Even if you don't get on with them too well, they are still there to help you and you should still ask as many questions as you need to as they will still help you.

If you don't want to talk to your lecturer, talk to your academic advisor or personal tutor instead. They are also there to help you and if you need anything, ask them as they will help you out. If you have any questions, or just need some help, schedule an appointment with them to talk about it.

If you are struggling, talk to the support teams at your Uni as they are there to help you and will be able to support you through anything you are struggling with. Even if you don't think you need to do this, it can be really nice to talk to someone and they can help you think of a plan to feel motivated.

I hope some of this helps,

Hi there,

So many people lose motivation to attend, especially around this time of year. The important thing is to not be discouraged and to keep trying!

I'd highly recommend reaching out to any support services offered by the university. They are there for these reasons, and would be more than happy to hear more about why you are feeling unmotivated. They might be able to help form a plan to get you back on track too, which could help you later down the line if you feel this way again.

For me, I find that planning and scheduling works the best for boosting my motivation. I always purchase a yearly planner, and I make sure to write down everything I need to attend in advance. I often write extra to-do lists too, and I love being able to cross something off that I did that day. It may sound silly, but would be worth trying!

Something important to remember is that you are paying to be here, and you signed up to be here. You have a passion for whatever you are studying, so go and make the most of it! It's unfortunate that you don't like your lecturer, but we will all have to interact with people we dislike at one point or another, so it's a good learning experience too!

I hope this helps, and don't be discouraged. You've made it this far already! 🙂

Hi there,

It's completely understandable to feel this way - especially in your first year when everything still feels new and a bit overwhelming. Loosing motivation at this time of the year is something a lot of students struggle with, the important thing is you've acknowledged this and are trying to make improvements 😊

Since there are only a few weeks left, maybe try setting small, manageable goals - like attending just one class a day or focus on going in for the sessions your find the most interesting. Sometimes even just showing up and being around others can improve your mindset. If there's a class you're really not enjoying, see if there's anything you do find useful in it, even if it's small - this can help make going feel more worthwhile.

It might help to talk to someone about how you're feeling - like a personal tutor or student support advisor. They're there to support you, and they might be able to offer flexible options or simply just listen. If you're struggling with feeling lonely in your lectures, I recommend putting yourself out there and sparking a conversation with someone. It's easier said than done, but something as simple as talking about an assignment or lecture topic can be a great icebreaker. If you click with someone, maybe suggest grabbing a coffee on campus or meeting up to study. It doesn't have to be anything big but it could help you to start building those connections.

You've made it this far in the year, and that's something to be proud of. A lot of students go through dips like this and it doesn't mean you're failing or doing something wrong. You've got this! 🎉

Hope this helps and best of luck with your studies.
Best wishes,
^ Hannah
