4th Year Honours Project

Hi everyone,

I'm a 3rd-year Anatomy student at the University of Glasgow, and I need to pick my 4th-year project soon, but I’m struggling to decide.

The options for project types are:
🔹 Investigative Wet (Lab-based research)
🔹 Investigative Dry (Data analysis, computational work)
🔹 Dissertation (Literature-based research)
🔹 Outreach (Science communication/public engagement)
🔹 Internship (Work experience-based project)

The areas I can choose from include:
Neuroanatomy/Disease
Cardiovascular System/Disease
Musculoskeletal Anatomy/Disease
Digital Anatomy/Medical Visualisation
Reproductive System/Disorders

a few others like pathology, forensics, and cancer.
My career goal is Graduate Entry Medicine, but I’m also open to an MSc or research in the future. I’m trying to figure out which project would be the most interesting, enjoyable, and useful for my future applications.

If you’ve done a similar degree or project, I’d love to hear:
What type of project you picked and how you found it
What kind of work was involved in each project type
Which areas of anatomy were the most engaging
Any advice on what works best for a GEM or research-focused application

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi @Anatomist!

I can't give too much advice regarding GEM or which subject area to choose, I'm a final year biochemist going into research (protein structure and function) so anatomy/diagnostics isn't my area!

If you are open to scientific lab-based research in the future, I think that the wet lab experience will help you a lot, especially if you don't have any lab-based experience outside of university practical work. My experience definitely made me more competitive when applying for postgraduate research roles. However, it's a personal decision and you should pick what you're interested in and what you think will be helpful to you.
