Cardiff, Edinburgh, Sheffield or Manchester for architecture 2025?

I have offers from these 4 unis for 2025 and am torn on which to pick. If someone could help me with the pros and cons of each or which they would be inclined to choose, I would appreciate it!!
Hiya,

Firstly big congratulations on getting these offers, I know thats not easy. I am currently in the school of Architecture, doing my masters in Urban Design, but I also did my undergraduate here at Cardiff. My housemate is also studying Architecture right now in her 4th year. I (and my housemate) really love it!

Pros:

The staff are so lovely, so smart, interesting, helpful and supportive.

The Welsh School of Architecture (wsa), is one of the leading schools for architecture in the country.

The school hosts an annual student-led show called the WSA Student show, where employers and leading names in the field come from all over the country to see the student work and network - really great for growing your network and potentially looking for jobs.

The building (and main uni cathays campus) is so lovely, great location and super conveniently placed next to the city centre, Bute park, Alexandra gardens, and where most students live - Cathays. So nothing for me is more than a 15 minute walk it is so amazing.

Real life case studies and fieldwork experience to apply your work to, from travelling around the UK to abroad they really like you to have an understanding of the places you are working with and get stuck in.

The uni and students' union (su) is outstanding, the SU is one of the best in the country, and it really lives up to that, with so many societies, experiences, and so much to do all the time. Do you have any specific hobbies or interests?

With the great location, friendly uni, and excellent su there is a really great student community, which is one of my favourite things about being at Cardiff uni.

Its a pretty affordable city, with many opportunities to pick up work that is flexible around your studies.

I don't want this to sound unrealistic, but right now I genuinely can't think of cons, I will have a think hahaha.
I hope this is helpful, do you have any questions?

I notice Alexandra Gardens as 'misgendered' here.

How sociable were the people on the course? I like making friends from different cultures and backgrounds etc. because I just do and I wanna know if Cardiff is a diverse place.
Im stuck between bath and Cardiff because I liked the integrated work placements for the 2nd and 3rd year that bath had, however the general costs for my uni experience would probably be better off at bath. Also does the course do school trips, and if so are they expensive? Bath didn’t really do any due to the placements.
Ooo also another question, in the studio could you have allocated desk spaces/areas or is it a first come first serve situation, because I didn’t know if you could leave work somewhere and have it there the next day. Plus is the Bute building open 24/7 or do they force u to go home at a certain time?😭💀

Hiya,

Thank you for the questions, its great to know you are so interested and enthusiastic.
So:

1.

Yes I think the people are quite sociable, they have a society, an end of year ball! To be honest though, I think Cardiff in general is quite a sociable uni, because of what I was saying about how close everything is, and how active our students union is it all adds up to a big community, which is really nice.

2.

Yes there is a very diverse range, my housemate (studying architecture) is from Romania, and I think she would agree there is a lot of diversity on the course. As well as diversity in the uni and city in general. Most of my friends here come from varying international backgrounds! In a course like architecture as well I think its super beneficial to hear about how other places work, other cultures, especially in a creative field that can be so personal.

3.

Yeah Cardiff offer a follow on masters course (which you can apply for now as a kind of integrated pathway almost), where in 4th year you would do work placement all year. Yes they do multiple trips a year, that to the best of my knowledge are almost all paid for. My housemate went to London for a couple nights, and they even transferred them money so they could buy food at no expense. I also would say that Bath and Cardiff are not too dissimilar in price, if anything even maybe Cardiff cheaper from when i've visted Bath, which in Cardiff is maybe motivated by the large prominent population.

4.

So you don't get allocated a seat no, but I feel like people naturally "choose" a seat and will often go toward there. But also i've seen lots of people leave their stuff on their tables, especially if they are only back the next day. But also there are sometimes lockers u can put stuff in to keep safe.

5.

No the bute building is not 24/7, it is open everyday, but the library inside closes at 21:30 on weekdays, and I think thats around the time they'd lock up the whole building. There is another big library nearby which is 24/7 called the arts and social sciences library.

I know this is a lot of infomation, but I hope it helps.
Any other questions or things you want me to follow up on?

Be aware that Sheffield, Edinburgh and Cardiff are all cutting lots of staff including academic which may impact some of the support available on your course or opportunities/options

Hi hazelmswai, 👋

It's great to hear you have received an offer from Sheffield and three other great universities, congrats!👏

Architecture is a great course at Sheffield: we have been ranked 1st in the UK for architecture in the Complete University Guide (by subject) 2025 and 2nd in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide (by subject) 2025! 😲

I know someone who studied architecture here and they loved that the course was fully accredited but also the facilities which are amazing. We have collaborative, open-plan studios with panoramic views of Sheffield, and make use of on-site facilities for woodwork, metalwork, casting and architectural model-making. 📐

Sheffield is also an amazing city to live (I did my BA, MA and now PHD all at uni of Sheffield because of how much I fell in love with the city!) There's so much to do; there's always shows and concerts happening and, my personal favourite, there are so many cool cinemas dotted around. 🎬️

We are also situated next door to the peak district and there are various buses and trains that can take you into the peaks for a day of exploring. My personal recommendations would be Ladybower reservoir and Bamford Edge! 🌿

Please do let me know if you would like anymore information about Sheffield (living or studying here) and I would be more than happy to help! 😀

All best wishes,
Phoebe
