Southampton or Liverpool Medical School

I have offers for both medical schools and I need help deciding which to firm.

What is the teaching style for each medical school?

When do placements start for each medical school?

What is the difference in teaching style?

What is the ratio of independent learning to contact teaching in the first year?

What type of support is available to students?

How far do you have to travel for placement?

Thank you for answering my questions.

Please also share other unique things about each medical school.

Hello @trintydrswim,

Congratulations on your offers! I’m a second year student at Southampton University studying psychology, but will do my best to answer your questions.

What is the teaching style and what is the ratio of independent learning to contact teaching in the first year?
The course includes lectures, classes and tutorials, coursework and independent study. In the first year, 32% of the course is scheduled learning and teaching, 67% is independent learning and 1% is placement. All of the lecturers on my course are so friendly and helpful, so I’m sure that medicine is the same! In the first year, assessments include oral presentations, written and practical exams, portfolios and placement assessment. You can find out more about the learning and assessments here.

When do placements start and how far do you have to travel?
I’m not too sure about this, so I will email the module lead and let you know what she says!

What is the difference in teaching style?
I can't speak for Liverpool University, but I found this course page which may be useful.

What type of support is available to students?
Students are supported by a personal academic tutor, and have access to a senior tutor. The university and student hub also offers a wide range of support for issues like mental health, money, accommodation, safety, etc. You can find out more about these here. The students union (SUSU) also has support systems in place, including the advice centre.

I hope this helped and let me know if you have any more questions 🙂
