Choosing Between Royal Holloway,QMUL,Leicester and Exeter for Engineering Need Advice

Hey everyone,

I’m currently deciding on my firm and insurance choices for uni and could really use some advice! I’ve got offers from:
Royal Holloway (Electrical Engineering) BBB with B in EPQ
QMUL (Electrical Engineering) BBB with B in EPQ
Leicester (General Engineering) BBB with B in EPQ
Exeter (General Engineering) BBB with A in EPQ

I’m a bit stuck because Exeter seems like a great uni, but it’s quite far from where I live. On the other hand, Royal Holloway and QMUL are both in/near London, which is more convenient but I’m not sure how they compare for engineering. Leicester seems like a solid middle to low ground, but I don’t know much about the experience there for general engineering.

If anyone has any insights on the courses, teaching quality, student life or career prospects for engineering at these unis, I’d really appreciate it!

Thanks!

Are all the offers for MEng programmes? If you have already chosen your path to Electrical Engineering, I would suggest choosing Electrical Engineering over General Engineering.

Royal Holloway's recent development has been devoted towards media and communication? If so then Queen Mary may be a better choice.

Hey there 👋

We are really excited you're considering Leicester for Engineering! 🏆️ I can give you some insights into the course we have here and a bit about Leicester in general.

First thing to note, studying General Engineering is a great option, especially if you are undecided on what to specialise in. All engineers need an excellent knowledge of all the basic engineering principles, so all courses (including Aerospace, Biomedical, Electrical + Electronic, General and Mechanical Engineering) will share the exact same first year. So, if you then want to definitely go down a Electrical Engineering route you can, or you can equally stick to the General Engineering pathway.

You can find out more about the course on our course page: General Engineering BEng and you can see about signing up for an Offer Holder Day or Open Day so you can chat to some of our students here on our enquiries link. Speaking to students at our university will be a great way to find out what it's really like, they'd be really happy to discuss this!

As for the city and university itself, Leicester is so good if you are a student. There's over 200 societies to join so you have plenty of opportunities to make new friends and find new interests. The city has loads of clubs and bars that aren't too far from campus if you want to go out and there's lots of events you can join. I really recommend the Attenborough Arts Centre for creative courses to take as it's bang in the centre of campus and there's student discounts available too. Leicester has also got really good links to other cities around the UK (Birmingham and London are so nearby - you can get a train to London in 1 hour 5 mins!)

We also place a high importance on Careers + Employability. During your study, you'll have the option to spend a Year Abroad or do a Year in Industry. Some recent placements have included: Recent placements have included: Rolls-Royce, Force India F1 Team, Ford Motors, Intel UK, Network Rail, Porsche Engineering Services, Aero Engine Controls, Babcock International, Auto Electrical Services and Jaguar Land Rover.

I really wish you all the best in your future choices

In terms of faculty reputation and opportunities:
1) Exeter, definitely the strongest option
2) Queen Mary & Leicester, both have decent reputations but also not as strong as other departments
3) Royal Holloway, not got much of reputation in engineering… I can’t recall ever meeting any alumni or research staff at conferences or in industry.

Of course the first thing to decide is:
- do you want to study electrical or general engineering
- where you be happy living

Both of these are probably more important than specific institution.
