Student loan repeat year help

I had to repeat 1st year of medicine, and now I’m in my 3rd year (but 4th year total of uni). Everyone has always told me that you get +1 year of student finance based on your degree length, but now SLC and SFE have given me no funding for next year? I won’t get my NHS bursary until final year so I’ll have no income for next year. @SLC please help because I’m panicking and the live chat feature didn’t help because he said I should be getting an NHS bursary and so I’m not being covered for my repeat year??

Hi Georgie,

We are unable to access online accounts on the student room. When you log into your online account and look at all your applications does it show that you repeated a year? Did you have any other previous study before you started this course?

Thanks, Drew

Hi Drew,

My Entitlement letters show that I repeated year 1, and that next years loan is for year 4 (not year 5, which I know I don’t get a loan for as it is replaced by NHS bursary). This is my first degree and so I have no previous loans. I don’t understand why I am not entitled to the extra year and I’m really concerned.

Hi Georgie03,

This doesn't sound like it is in relation to previous study directly.

Students receive the usual package of support available to undergraduates in their first 4 years of study. This is subject to normal previous study rules. ‘4’ should be used as the ordinary duration of a new Medicine/Dentistry course in the previous study calculation.

This is because standard entitlement is not applied to any years of the course where the student is eligible to apply for an NHS bursary.

In the 5th year and any subsequent years of their course students are entitled to an income-assessed NHS bursary and, therefore, we award them the reduced rate of maintenance loan only. To clarify if this is in relation to this, you would need to call or start a live chat so that this can be looked into.

Hi Clare,

I am not eligible for NHS bursary next year as this is only available in Stage 5. I am going into Year 5 of my course, but Stage 4 (due to the repeat year). Therefore I am under the impression I should be receiving standard entitlement, not reduced rate of maintainable loan.
Please could you advise me how to be connected to an advisor on the phone because I have called the number but can only seem to get through to automated systems, with no option to speak to a person, and I am really starting to panic.

Hi Georgie,

Our lines and live chat are both open from 8.am to 7.pm. Any option on the phone will put you through to an adviser if you follow the options. The live chat pops up on the right hand side of the screen when you are in your account and an agent is available. Thanks, Jason
