Is Fairfax House worth it?

Now that Lister and Kato are well out of my price bracket I'm starting to like the idea of Fairfax House financially. Pretty(ier) building, rooms look serviceable, catered's a bonus, don't really care for having an ensuite. Not infeasibly far away, sounds like it's relatively social too. Can someone there spoil it for me (or not, if you've had a great time there!)

Hi there,

I didn't personally live in Fairfax House during my time as a student at York, but one of my friends did, and she really enjoyed her time there.

In my first year, I lived in ensuite, catered accommodation in Derwent College, so I'll share a bit about my experience as a catered student:

How does catered accommodation work?
In catered accommodation, you get your breakfast and evening meals every week day during the semester, so you still get the chance to cook at the weekends and lunchtimes. I think in Fairfax house you would have your meals at the Vanbrugh catering outlet.

What's breakfast like?
At breakfast, I had the option of a cooked breakfast, a continental breakfast, or a mix of the two. I usually got a cooked breakfast and would take some cereal, yogurt and fruit to have as snacks during the day. I really enjoyed the breakfasts, and felt they set me up for the day.

What are the evening meals like?
Assuming that it still works the same as it did when I was in first year, back in 2018, at dinner you could either have a soup and a main course, or a main course and a dessert. Being a sweet lover, I always got a main and a dessert! There were always lots of different options, so I never struggled to find something I liked to eat. If for some reason I couldn't eat at the meal time, I could bring a Tupperware and get my dinner to eat later, which was useful sometimes.

Verdict?
Overall, I really enjoyed being in catered accommodation. Going to the meals was a great social thing to do with my flatmates. I didn't have the pressure of planning meals, buying food, cooking and then doing the washing up. Being catered eased me in to independent life at university and definitely helped my parents worry about me less!

I hope this helps! - Hannah 😀
