The Student Room Group

making an appeal

hi! i recently applied for student finance and got my allocated amount back, but i feel as though it’s unfair for a number of reasons i’ll discuss below.

the main reason is that i don’t live with my parents (i live with my older brother now), i haven’t for almost a year and yet for some reason my parents’ combined income decides my maintenance loan. in addition to this, student finance did not take into account whether or not my parents were together when calculating it. my parents are currently going through a divorce and haven’t been living together since november 2024, but the application process did not give me or my parents somewhere to mention this factor. plus, since placing my original application, my mother has been made redundant (literally today), will that impact my application too?

would this entire situation be considered something i can use to appeal my maintenance loan calculation? and if it is, what proof would i need to provide.

many thanks!

Hi there,

It would not be an appeal and would not be looked at as an appeal. When you submitted your application did you say that your parents were separated? If you are under the age of 25 then you would be classed as a dependent student regardless if you have not been living with your parents. Would you have been self-sufficient for 3 years prior to the 1st day of the 1st academic year of your course?

Thanks, Drew

hi drew!

in my application, it did not give me or my parents the option to say they are separated. i’m assuming this happened in the questionnaire because i selected that i don’t live with them.

no i would not have been self-sufficient for three years, i only moved out last year.

thanks

Hi there,

Then you would need to pick one parent to support your application. Did they get the email to support your application? Once you decide who is going to support your application and once they support the application they will also need to complete a Marital Status Declaration form. You will need to call to get this emailed to you and your sponsor will need to complete it and you can upload it from your online account with the evidence requested on the form. We are open Monday to Friday 8am to 7pm.
