Mathsy Jobs

Hi all! I do Chemistry at uni and have been aiming to get a job in patents for a while now. But I can’t shake the feeling that it’s not what I really want to do. I ADORE maths and feel like I want my job to incorporate this in some way. I do chemistry at Oxford so my degree is very maths heavy (including separate maths course in first year) so defo should be able to switch into a maths heavy career although I imagine certain jobs may be off limits? Basically I’m looking for career paths that are maths based, that I can go into with a chemistry degree and I also really want it to be a job with lots of people contact/where people skills will set you apart. I also want it to be good money if possible. Any suggestions are welcome!

Hello @taylor swift !!,

There are many maths focused jobs you can find that will take graduates from any dgree background or will speciffy a numerical degree. Many of these roles will also include training from the employer so they are more open with the dgrees they want. I would recommend looking at consulancies as a major part of the job is interacting with clients, which heavily relies on the people skills you want to include in your job. There is also a wide range of diffent consultancies from finacial to sustainable so you can choose the right area for you.

Hope this helps

I don’t really know much about the career but I was under the impression that it was a lot of solo work and very little contact with other people?

To be honest, there are quite a few different areas and the amount of mahs involved will vary from position to posotion. It may be worth considering what area of maths you have delt with the most over your degree or that you enjoy the most. The most obvious condsulancy area is actuarial or finacial, but yuou can also get consultancies that focus on statistical aspects (risk management, statistical modelling) or areas to do with operational research ( supply chain, logistics). Focusing on an area of maths that you enjoy will mean that you have a better chance of getting a position in an area that you will enjoy working in.

Hope this helps
