SFE Masters funding and previous overpayment debt

Good morning,

I was just wondering if anyone can help please.I’m thinking about applying for a Master’s but don’t want to do so if I’m not able to get funding.

I previously had funding for a PGCE but had to withdraw, which resulted in a maintenance loan overpayment. I buried my head in the sand due to bad mental health and the overpayment ended up being sent to a debt collectors. It’s how been added to my Debt Management Plan with Stepchange who have set up a payment plan with SFE (I’m a mature student).

My question is, would I still be able to get a loan to do a Master’s or will this have messed it up for me?

Any help would be fantastic, as I don’t want to get my hopes up another doing a masters if funding is unlikely/not possible.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Chellew23,

If you have not cleared those arrears in full, this would effect your eligibility for support. Any overpayment arrears outstanding must be cleared before being able to claim the loan moving forward.

'Students will not be eligible for a PGM if they have any outstanding arrears on any Higher or Further Education (HE or FE) loan balance. Once any arrears are paid in full, they can then apply for a PGM. Arrears should not be confused with a grant or loan overpayment.'

Thanks, Clare

Hi Clare,

Thanks for coming back to me.

What does it mean when it says ‘arrears should not be confused with a grant or loan overpayment’?

Ok, so to confirm there is no point applying for funding for a MA until the outstanding balance of the overpaid maintenance loan is paid off?

Thanks so much.

That would be correct. Once this is done you'd be able to apply for the funding. Thanks, Jason
