How to get into teaching

Hello, I've been wanting to get into teaching secondary school for a long time now (specifically biology) but I'm still wondering how. I've asked my science teachers at school and they told me that I can first get a science degree from a university and then train to be a teacher, how true is this? If it is true what are the next steps towards becoming a teacher for secondary school after getting a science degree. I am doing A-levels at the moment and have already applied for biomedicine (I'm hoping I can branch this into a biology teacher).

1) Complete your A-Levels,

2) Gain degree in Biomedicine

(optional - gain classroom experience either during uni or after graduation; cover supervisor, TA roles etc. This will give you first hand experience of working in a school environment and it will look good on your personal statement for your PGCE.

3) Complete your PGCE either through a university or go for a SCITT route which is school-based.

Hope this helps.

Hi @dfghertytrfvbgfd,

In addition, there are limited undergrad options that offer QTS along with a degree. This route can sometimes save you a year (instead of undertaking a 3 year degree then a 1-year postgrad teacher training course) but there might not be too many / any courses specifically for Secondary Biology.

There are also TDAs (Teacher Degree Apprenticeships) that are initially being launched for those wishing to teach Maths but this might be expanded to other subject areas (such as STEM) in the future.

Please visit our website for more information - https://getintoteaching.education.gov.uk/steps-to-become-a-teacher

If you decide to get a degree, then work towards QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) in a postgraduate capacity, you can request one of our advisers in your 1st or 2nd year of Uni. An experienced teacher will provide you with FREE, tailored, one-to-one support throughout the whole process.

I hope this helps.

Best of luck with your A Levels!
