i wish the double standard in age gap relationships would just end

A lot of people are happy with a 19 year old boy dating a 16 year old girl but completely against a 19 year old girl dating a 16 year old boy. A lot of people are happy with a 25 year old man dating a 20 year old girl but completely against a 25 year old woman dating a 20 year old boy. A lot of people are happy with a 40 year old man dating a 30 year old woman but completely against a 40 year old woman dating a 30 year old man. I really wish that this double standard would end. After all, given that there have been numerous examples throughout history of men being violent towards women surely a relationship between an older woman and a younger man is less concerning in terms of violence isn't it? I think that the age difference
in a relationship (unless it's something ridiculous) shouldn't be the main point of concern no matter whether it's the male or female whose the older one. Factors influencing a relationships success that are more important in my opinion are compatibility, maturity and how friendly the relationship is generally.
Eh I’ve noticed people being critical or not critical both sides.
Can't say I've noticed a double standard either. You've mentioned that maturity is a more important indicator of relationship success, and I'd tend to agree with that, but at younger ages (up to early 20s) maturity is closely tied to age because women/girls generally mature at a faster rate than men/boys, so an age gap where the woman is notably older is more likely to have a maturity gap. But as I say, I think you're fighting against a straw man here. There are unjustifiable double standards between men and women in a lot of aspects of relationships, but I don't think age gap is broadly one of them.

Who said people are ok with a "19 year old boy dating a 16 year old girl" or a "19 year old girl dating a 16 year old boy"? Thats wrong.

There are really two things that motivate people to dislike age gaps.

The first is that age gaps can contain an unbalanced power dynamic and historic chivalry leads people to view women as the victim. From my observation the type of women who get into decade plus age gaps actually know exactly what they want.

The second is that a lot of women say it gives them an ‘ick’, this is actually suggested to be an instinctual mate guarding response based upon the fact that younger women are likely to be more fertile than them and so it’s ingrained in them to view it with disgust.

I generally don’t much care.

I really don't think that age gaps, as you demonstrate within your post, are all that problematic. The general rule for age gaps is half your age plus 7, but even then, it's not the end of the world as long as both sides are happy and legal.

Idk man, I definitely haven't heard of that double standard. For most people, they either like age gaps or don't, regardless of the genders involved. In fact, if there is any double standard, I would say that people are slightly more comfortable with the woman being older because a younger woman with an older man is associated with more of a power imbalance due to patriarchy issues.

It cuts both way, both men and women get a raised eyebrow if they have a much younger partner. It’s just a bit more normal for men to want highly inappropriate age gaps

Yeah this thread raises some wild accusations about what a majority of people think.

Any 16-19 relationship would concern many, but when you start getting into 20-25, 30-40 only a tiny % have an opinion so that's the only ones you hear, no one else feels it's worth mentioning tbh. I struggle to imagine what genuine arguments could be made against a 30-40 relationship that weren't just someone clearly projecting their own issues.
