The Student Room Group

student finance hasn't requested my household income

I applied for the maximum amount of maintenance loan, but I have not been asked to provide my household income. I'm not sure if this is because I live with my grandparents (and have for the past 9 years), so I haven't provided a parental contact as my mum is deceased and I've had no contact with my father since I was like 2. I need the loan as I am moving into halls of residence for university and will likely not have financial support from my family as they can not afford it.
There is an option to fill out a form for MT maintenance loan but it still does not ask for any income details. It also says that I've already applied for a higher amount of maintenance loan (£4,915 + up to £5,629)
Is this because I am classed as estranged? They have not asked me to provide any proof of this either. Have I missed something when applying? I am worried that they will give me the minimum maintenance loan as I can not afford to live off this.
From my household income I am eligible for around £10,050 which is not far off the maximum loan which I would be eligible for under estrangement. Am I eligible for estrangement and how do I go about applying for this? If not, how do I include my financial details to ensure that I get the MT maintenance loan?

Hi there,

Had we emailed you any documents to complete? If you are estranged from your Dad and it's for the 25/26 academic year you can upload this form here: Completed by you and a third party https://media.slc.co.uk/sfe/2526/ft/sfe_confirmation_of_estrangement_form_2526_o.pdf confirming what you've stated above in regards to your parents. This would then go to be reworked and correct your funding. Thanks, Jason

Hi, no I have not received any documents to complete. Am I definitely eligible for estrangement or should I use the financial details of my grandparents?

You would be assessed as an independent student if you're estranged from your Dad as we don't use your grandparents details. Thanks, Jason

Hi, I've filled out the estrangement forms. I've received an email thanking me for my application and have tried to ring up student finance but was unsuccessful. I am worried that this is being processed and I won't receive the extra maintenance loan. Is there a reason that I haven't been contacted for further information regarding my parents?

Hi Ella, your entitlement can change at anytime so if you are awarded a specific amount this can always be amended.

You wouldn't be asked for evidence from them if you are estranged. If you've sent the estrangement form then this needs to be processed and can take 8 working days at the moment from when we have received this. Thanks, Jason

Thank you so much. I've submitted the estrangement forms as evidence to support my application online, should I also send them in the post or is it fine online?

Hi, thank you so much for your help. my application has updated and i’ve been sent the following email:
Student finance getting less than expected for Academic Year 2025/26You told us that you would like your application for student finance to be based on your household income information but there was some information missing. If you still want to apply for student finance based on yourhousehold income or your independent status, we need more information fromyou. Please complete the attached Dependent or Independent Status form andreturn this to us alongside the required evidence as listed on the form.

I have already submitted estrangement forms, do I just need to complete the Dependent or Independent Status form? Prior to this they have not asked me to provide any extra information. None of the stuff on the form is applicable. I can submit my mum’s death certificate along with my birth certificate, but my dad is alive I just haven’t had contact with him since I was a toddler. This has all been explained by my third party on the estrangement form. Should I get a letter written by a professional along with my mother's death certificate and tick the box that says I have no contact with either parent? Is there anything else they are likely to request or will this be sufficient?

Hi ellarosexxx,

Just upload your mothers death certificate to your account with a cover letter. Our current processing timescales are approximately 7 working days with subject to change depending on our current volumes.

Hi, thank you. I uploaded a cover letter, my mum’s death certificate, my birth certificate, affidavit from solicitor confirming my living arrangements and letter from my primary school headteacher confirming my living arrangements . Prior to this i uploaded estrangement forms with the third party being my current english teacher. will this be sufficient evidence ?
