How much time does commuting takes you?

Hello Student5738,

If you’re referring to commuting to and from campus it took me 7 minutes via bus and 20 via walking in 1st and 2nd year.

Are you looking for advice on this topic?

How much time does commuting takes you?

Hi @Student5738 ,

Everyone has a completely different commute time. I personally have stayed away from home for all of my years at University - in first year I stayed in halls and since then I have lived in student houses near to my Uni.
In first year my walk was around 10 minutes, and second and third year it has been around 30 minutes to walk or 10/15 on the bus!

If you are wanting to stay in halls, your uni will likely have information on their website or they may send you some information about how long it will take you to get to campus from every accommodation which is really helpful. Student areas that people live in are usually fairly close to campus too and transport is usually really accessible!

If you are staying at home and commuting, obviously the average commute time varies a lot, but for a lot of people I know, it is around 30/45 minutes. I think that anything over an hour would start to be quite tiring, especially if you are having to do it every day.

Another thing to think about if you are commuting is how you will get to Uni - bus, train, driving etc. Each mode of transport has pros and cons - trains and buses can be unreliable, but you may be able to get a bit of work done or rest while you are commuting. Driving is more reliable but it can get busy.

I always suggest that the best thing to do if you are unsure is to do the commute one day and then you can see if it is feasible to do it in one day or not, and if you would be happy to do it every day if you needed to.

I hope some of this helps,

Hey!
I commuted in my first year of university and it was ~1 hour 20 mins, including the walk to and from the train station, I found it doable and I definitely saved a ton of money this way, however at times it is pretty tiring. This year I've moved away from home and now I'm just a 15 minute walk  - How long commuting takes depends on you and how close you live/your accommodation is to the university. If your unsure how long it would take you commuting you could always before university starts map out the route you would take and try it out!

Hope this helps,
Emily (:

1 hour 20 min everyday, how did you managed?

For first year, I was only in 3-4 days a week, and the days I was in I'd spend that hour on the train there and back doing uni work and found that once I got home, I didn't really have much I needed to do, so I could just chill! 😄-obviously had to become wayyy more of a morning person, but once I got into the habit, it gave me a pretty good balance between uni & free time and made it manageable!
