A question about second degree exemption for an Open Degree

Hi

I have a BA already so I’m aware that I can only get a tuition loan to study for a second degree if it’s part time STEM. I wonder if combining Computer Science and a non-STEM subject would be eligible?

I have picked 2 courses:

1 . Open a university BSc (Honours) Computing & IT and a second subject Q67

2. Open University Combined STEM degree R28

Would I be eligible for a part time tuition loan if I chose a non-STEM subject as a second subject?

Thank you in advance!

Hi there,

What is the second subject you'd be looking to study and is the Combined degree a 3 year course? Thanks, Jason

Hi

Thank you for getting back to me.

I’d be studying part-time, so it would be a 6 year route.

For Q67 I was thinking about either psychology or business.

For R28, I’d choose the Computing and IT path. They offer a variety of modules to choose from during stages 1 and 2, so I’d probably pick a selection of business, accounting and law. Stage 3 is all STEM.

So, for R28 it would be: 50% STEM for stages 1 and 2 and 100% STEM for stage 3. So 120 non-STEM credits and 240 STEM credits overall.

I’m undecided between the two above routes and it would help me decide to know if any of these would qualify for a second degree student loan exemption.

Thank you very much again for your help!

Hi there,

The Computing & IT and a second subject Q67 is not an exception course. The Combined STEM degree R28 is an exception course so you would be eligible for the Tuition Fee Loan.

Thanks, Drew

Hi

Thank you, one more question if possible: I’ve completed registration with OU now and I’d like to know if I’m eligible for student loan for all of the R28 modules or only the STEM ones? I’ll be studying 120 non-STEM credits and 240 STEM credits.

Many thanks
Eva

Hi Eva,

I have responded to your other thread. If you can avoid multiple threads in future and just respond to the one thread to avoid any confusion. Thanks, Jason
