Coming to City St George’s University as a postgraduate student, I expected an intense academic journey—but what I didn’t expect was the range of opportunities to work and gain experience within the university itself. London is an expensive city, and like many students, I wanted to find a way to earn while balancing my studies. What I discovered was that the university offers so many flexible roles that fit around postgraduate schedules.
From my own experience and from speaking to fellow students, here are some of the most common (and rewarding) ways to work within the university:
✅ Student Ambassador – If you enjoy meeting new people and representing your university, this role is perfect. I’ve taken part in open days, campus tours, and outreach events, and it’s been a great way to develop public speaking skills and connect with students.
✅ Graduate Teaching Assistant – Many postgraduates support undergraduate classes, whether through leading seminars, marking assignments, or assisting in labs. It’s a fantastic way to develop teaching experience while reinforcing your own knowledge.
✅ Research Assistant – Working closely with faculty members on research projects is a great way to gain hands-on experience, contribute to academic work, and even get your name published. City University offers research roles through UNITEMPS, where faculty members actively recruit postgrads for paid research internships.
✅ Administrative Roles – I’ve met postgrads working in various university departments, student services, and the library. These roles provide insight into how the university operates while helping you develop organisational and communication skills.
✅ IT Support – If you’re tech-savvy, many students work within the university’s IT helpdesk, assisting staff and students with technical issues. It’s a flexible role and a great way to earn money while using existing skills.
These jobs are not just about making money—they’re a great way to develop skills, gain experience, and build professional connections within the university. Opportunities can be found through:
📌 UNITEMPS & university job portals – The go-to place for research internships and part-time jobs.
📌 The Careers and Employability Hub – A great resource for guidance and opportunities.
📌 Networking with lecturers & departments – Many research and teaching assistant roles aren’t widely advertised, so asking around helps!
