Funding for another degree

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone can help me with a funding question.

I’m looking to apply for either of the following Speech and Language Therapy courses at City, University of London, starting in September 2025:
MSc Speech and Language Therapy (Pre-registration) Course code: PSSLTC, 2 years full-time
BSc Speech and Language Therapy Course code: B620, 3 years full-time

I already hold both a BA and an MA, which were funded through SAAS (undergraduate) and then Student Finance England (postgraduate).

As I’m retraining and changing careers, I’m wondering if either of these courses would still be eligible for SFE funding (tuition and maintenance loans), since Speech and Language Therapy is an Allied Health Profession and may fall under the ELQ (Equivalent or Lower Qualification) exemptions?

Also, would I be eligible for the NHS Learning Support Fund on either course?

If anyone’s gone through this or knows the details, I’d really appreciate your help—thanks in advance!

Hi @cdavidson66

I know you're applying to London but hopefully I can clarify.

It is possible to get additional student finance for pre-registration health professional courses, even if you have received funding previously. For postgraduate pre-registration courses, it would be undergraduate funding you would receive, so the tuition fee loan and maintenance loan.

You can also apply for the NHS LSF as well as the student finance. This includes a training grant of £5000 per academic year, parental support of £2000 if you have at least one child under 15 (or under 17 with SEN), travel and dual accommodation expenses for practice placement, exceptional support fund (up to £3000). More information is available on the NHS BSA website: https://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/nhs-learning-support-fund-lsf.

There's some information on the government webpages regarding student finance, which references the healthcare professional courses: SFE: undergraduate funding. If you'd like to clarify further, you could give SFE a call on 0300 100 0607.

Hope this helps.
Mel 😊
