University of Bath vs Southampton vs Nottingham

Hi! I'm having a dilemma between the 3 universities for Msc Health Psychology:
University of Bath
University of Nottingham
University of Southampton

I read through the course module and I like them all. But I'm more concerned about the faculty and employment opportunities from these universities.
Hi Anon,

Congratulations on your offers from those fab unis! I had a friend who did their MSc in Health Psychology here at Bath and I also did my BSc Psychology here so I'll see if I can help!

At the end of the day, you are the best judge of what is best for you. Due to the courses' BPS accreditation there will be modules that are taught at each of these courses that will be the same, but there may be subtle differences in the way these are assessed or the material covered. Therefore I would take a careful look at the course contents and see which one seems most suited to what you want to learn.

You should also consider what kind of a uni and city you'd feel happiest in. All of your choices are relatively small-medium campuses and cities (Bath perhaps being on the small size) and are not too far apart in distance. So where did you feel most at home and where could you see yourself living a fulfilling student life?

I cannot speak for Notts or Southampton, but the employment prospects here at Bath are fantastic. The MSc Health Psychology is one of the only BPS-accredited MSc courses in the subject to offer a 16-week placement in the country. This will add a lot of value to your graduate CV as well as adding to your clinical experience portfolio should you want to apply for an NHS band 4-5 job or the clinical doctorate later down the line.

There's a lot to consider but perhaps if you are still unsure, write a pros and cons list and see if there is one which stands out as a winner?

I hope this helps a bit, best of luck with everything and making your choice!

Hi there,

Whilst I cannot speak for the other universities, I can let you know about the faculty/employment opportunities at Bath.

The MSc Health Psychology is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) which is key for employment in the field. Alongside this accreditation, the MSc includes a 16 week placement which, again, will boost your employability. Completing a placement shows your ability to integrate into a workplace environment, shows you what the job is actually like, and give you real life experience to talk about in interviews. The league tables echo Bath's employability: we are ranked 5th, 6th and 7th in the Guardian, Complete University Guide and Times respectively for graduate prospects. Perhaps looking at the other universities' graduate prospects may help you decide?

Other things to consider between the universities is the location, Nottingham and Southampton are both much larger cities than Bath and it depends on what suits you best. I really like the campus at Bath, which takes about 15/20 minutes to walk its length, and has a really nice community feeling. The city itself is beautiful and really safe. If you are able to attend an Open Day then that might give you a chance to see the faculty for yourself, if not Bath runs a virtual Open day as well:

Thanks!

Hi, it's great to hear you are considering Southampton!

If you want to find out more about the teaching, and modules you can read about it here : https://www.southampton.ac.uk/courses/health-psychology-masters-msc. Dr Leanne Morrison is the lead of this course and reading more about the staff profiles will give you a great insight into the faculty.

I would also recommend an open day, where often you can speak to faculty members and students to see what opportunities are available, and what the teaching is like from multiple perspectives.

Hope this can help

Just remember that living in Bath is as expensive as living in London.
