Hey there!

Many universities will just have a minimum requirement for GCSEs so I would recommend contacting the ones you are applying for to see how they use them and what their minimum requirements is!

myucat (myucat.co.uk) do a really in depth document about where to apply depending on your stats, its a big document under their 'strategic applications' section and was a lifesaver for me this year! hope this helps

Hi I am about to do my GCSEs very soon, assuming i am able to get 8/9 in english language, would getting a 7 in english lit affect my chances very much

Ironic that the two unis you gave examples of don’t care about GCSEs past minimum requirements (of which you meet).

Hi, mine were very similar and I got offers from Exeter and birmingham this year (the only Russel groups I applied to).

It’s worth checking you meet the minimum requirements and you’ll be fine- most don’t put a weighting on it I don’t think (the only one I know of is Cardiff)

Hello @gayathri_pregi,

All universities have different requirements, however the ones for Southampton can be found here.

For the BM5 medicine course, Southampton requires 7 GCSEs at grade 6/B or above, including English language, maths and either biology and chemistry, combined science, or science and additional science.

Hope this helped and let me know if you have any further questions!

Oh? Southampton doesn’t?? I didn’t know that
RG membership isn't a relevant consideration for medicine - it doesn't matter which medical school you graduate from to become a doctor in the UK.

Not all medical schools have the same way of shortlisting candidates in terms of GCSEs, some are very GCSE heavy (e.g. Cardiff, Oxford) some don't score GCSEs at all provided you meet minimum grades in maths and/or English language (e.g. UCL, Imperial), some may have other ways of shortlisting in terms of GCSEs.

You need to make decisions based on the ample information and evidence available, not assumptions about how you think medicine admissions work - and you should apply exclusively on the basis of which medical schools you have on paper the best chance of getting into, setting aside irrelevant factors like whether they're in the RG or not.

Based on your GCSEs I'd suggest focusing on less GCSE heavy medical schools.
