Supercurriculars for maths

What are some good super curriculars for maths? Thinking of doing just pure maths so work experience isn’t something I’ve considered, unless anyone knows anything?

So far I’ve only got gold in UKMT and silver in Physics Olympiad (if that’s even helpful for my application, i’m not too sure). Ahhh I deffo need to bump it up more! Does any reading apply to maths? Any help or ideas would be appreciated!

There are some suggested lists at oxbridge

Are you thinking of applying to oxbridge or ... for maths?

Hi @fjeksjxnfie,

The extent to which supercarriculars matter depends on the universities you are applying to. However, most universities simply want to see an indication of your enthusiasm and desire to study maths to the degree that you will at university. This can be through exploration of a university level topic or an application of it that is particularly interesting. You want to be able to show that you are prepared to spend the next 3-4 years studying maths to a very intensive level.

Hope this propvides some insight

For mine, I read some books and research-y stuff, did a LOT of maths like step/mat/tmua prep (yes supercurricular status debatable but who cares), did some programming, volunteering and chess.

The focus at the top universities is on interview performance and performance in the various admissions tests (STEP, MAT, TMUA). Most applicants will mention things like the Senior Maths Challenge and maths books. There are popular texts like ones written by Simon Singh, maybe basic books on number theory or group theory as well.

In your personal statement you should make it clear that you understand that university maths is about understanding rather than doing calculations, though of course you do calculations in the process.
