Loughborough, NUA and fitting in

Hi!
I’m currently a little lost choosing my university, I’m planning to study Graphic Design. I’m tied between Loughborough and Norwich University of the Arts. I want to put my education first, so Loughborough seems like the obvious choice as the course suits me better (I want to learn all types of design, including Illustration). But I’m worried I won’t fit in. I’m very introverted, not sporty at all, and like things like K-POP, Sanrio and video games. I’m scared that I won’t connect with anyone, because I don’t like partying at all and can be nervous talking to people. Has anyone similar to me gone to Loughborough? Any other ‘weird kids’? (That sounds a bit cheesy sorry!!) Would really appreciate to hear your honest experiences at either Uni!!

I have appkued for the foundation course at loughborough. Not sure if Graphic design is in the same location but if it is in the Edward Barnsley builiding it is very seperate fron all the sports facilities. Having an interest in sport is definately not nessecary and im sure there will be lots of other people who are introverted/dont like sports. I might be bias because i like loughborough but id say definately go to loughborough if you think the course is better!!

You don't have to do sport at Loughborough. Plenty of people don't and have loads of friends. You won't be the only one for sure.
There's loads of societies, so I'm sure you'll find your people.

Hi there!
I'm Charlotte, a year 2 graphic design student at Norwich Uni Arts. That's so exciting to hear you want to study the same!

Here's an insight into my experience so far: Within year 1 here, we had projects that spanned Graphic Design, Graphic Communication, Design for Publishing and UX Design (basically dabbled in all of the graphics quartet). This allowed us to gain so many extra skills, getting familiar with the adobe suite including After Effects for motion design and also Figma for website and app design.

At the end of year 1, we got to then choose if we wanted to stick with the course we originally chose to study, or whether we'd like to swap into any of the others that I mentioned above. Whilst I personally stuck with Graphic Design, most people I know actually swapped into one of the others! It was a great experience and gave me a much better insight into the various graphics routes and also taught me basic skills in the ones I still didn't even choose to study.

Year 2 is then solely the course you chose and has been a great year so far for me, with some amazing projects and opportunities including meeting people from industry to help with portfolios and projects and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch 🙂
Charlotte, Norwich Uni Arts.

Thank you so much for the reply! It’s really good to hear someone similar doing the same course ☺️ I’m a bit nervous about giving my socials to people I don’t know on the internet, and I don’t have the dm feature unlocked on student room yet, so I don’t really know what to do 🥲 I’m hoping that if I post this comment it counts as a post so I can unlock the dm feature! In the mean time, what K-pop groups do you like?
