Hi, I see this thread is from a week ago so I’m unsure if you’ve chosen yet. In the case that you haven’t, if London’s cost is an issue, might there be any reason why you haven’t taken Bart’s off your consideration completely?

still haven't decided. I like london a lot and would love living there, I dont want to be naive and say its super expensive and give up on it straight away - Just wondering if anyone else at barts had similar worries and whether they actually think its worth it and do you still get to enjoy uni life etc. Im just wondering if the uni and life at london is worth the Extra expense.

Hiya!

Well done on your offers, that's amazing!

I absolutely love living in Cardiff, but of course, I'm a bit biased as a student rep haha. Cardiff is definitely quite an affordable place to live, even with the cost of living crisis, I find things still quite affordable compared to other places and I can still pursue extra hobbies without being out of pocket. Other than that though, were there anything you were looking out for specifically in a university? For example, student life, or location, or student support. It can be helpful to know what you want from a city or a uni, as it helps weigh pros/cons and make decisions sometimes

well done on your offers! i was wondering what your gcse stats were as i would like to apply to qmul for dentistry this october. my sister goes to qmul and she said the environment there is not the best and going to a uni in london can be quite expensive, she did say that she wished she had gone out of london for uni. best of luck for ur a levels!

I suppose then you consider the key differences in city life in manny and qmul. However do keep in mind that as time goes on, I think that dental students will be more and more busy, so the differences become less and less noticeable. Cardiff is also a much smaller city than London and Manchester, with majority of placements being rural too- which may or may be your cup of tea. This might mean there’s less things to do, but it’s much much more walkable than a place like London, where you will have to commute a lot

There will be a Muslim community wherever you go, but Manchester and qmul and both known for significantly larger communities- to the point where that’s the first thing ppl think of when the unis come to mind 😅this is especially true in Bart’s

Does your sister do med or dent? Keep in mind qmul is quite separate to Bart’s- this could be a good or bad thing. I would say just focus on UCAT for now (if you haven’t already) and choose your options after. But to answer your question, not a lot of unis focus on GCSEs, and barts is not known to look at them.

hi she does graduate medicine at qmul so she spent time at both barts and qmul as she did an undergraduate degree in neuroscience

Cardiff does have a decent Muslim community! I can say this with confidence as someone who was on the ISOC (Islamic Society) committee. The Islamic Society here is massive, and holds loads of events through the year. Lots of people do end up making Muslim friends! In addition, Islamic Society as well as the university's chaplaincy lobbies a lot for accessible prayer spaces. I think now, the Cathays campus has 10-ish prayer spaces on campus? Its a lot!

Its also worth mentioning that there are also loads of halal places to eat near campus. They're mostly found on Crwys Road or City Road, but there are a diverse range of halal cuisines, from Malaysian, to Indian, to Thai. A lot of options!

We have two mosques near campus - one of them, Al-Manar, being right behind the Student Union, and the other Darl-Ul-Isra, being a 10ish minute walk from campus.

Let me know if you had any other questions about being a Muslim student in Cardiff!

I got an offer from Qmul too!!! If you’re Muslim then there’s amazing Muslim community at the uni and around it plus London is just amazing if other unis and students so it’s easy to socialise

Hi
First, congratulations on the offers.
You will spend 5 to 6 years of your life doing this course hence it is important to make the right decision . They are all good dental schools. My son was interviewed in Manchester and liked it, but he was rejected after the interview. I personally lived in Manchester and hated the weather and dark sky most of the time. Cardiff weather will be the same. London is a big city you will never get bored there. There are 10s thousands of students there who still manage financially . There is so much to do and places to visit in London. Weather is always good. If it was my son asking my advice, I would say QMUL , Manchester, and then Cardiff is the order of my preference. My son will go to this decision-making situation so I can empathise with you. Good luck

Hi again
If weather is no issue for you then Manchester is good choice over Cardiff
