Earth Science/ environmental science 2026

Hello, i'm a year 12 student who hopes to study earth science at uni , and i was wondering if there was anyone else in year 12 on here who is wanting to study earth sciences too ? I'd love to have a little community to share ideas, interests and tips with each other!

It might be worth posting a link to this thread in the Year 12 chat thread:

Me too! Where do you want to apply?
Hi! Im not quite sure what i want to study yet but environmental biology is a possibility for me 🙂 I am currently doing some virtual geology work experience with the British geological survey which is really interesting me!
Hello!
It's very exciting you're all thinking of studying earth sciences/environmental sciences at university! Lancaster offers both Environmental Science and Earth and Environmental Science (more geology based)! There are a range of modules and exciting field trips available which can be seen through these links https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/earth-and-environmental-science-bsc-hons-ff68/2026/ https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/environmental-science-bsc-hons-f750/2026/
Lancaster has a great location for environmental science as we are close to both the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales! There are also lots of opportunities for international field courses to Mt Etna, Switzerland, Croatia, Kenya etc!

Feel free to ask if you have any questions about the courses,
Lucy (Lancaster University Student Ambassador)

St Andrews hopefully

Yes i think that could be one of my choices but i’d be more tempted to apply for biology and earth sciences joint honours as im quite interested in paleontology but it doesn’t seem like the earth sciences course has much if any. I emailed and asked but never got a response

Nice! As you can probably imagine, I'm very interested in volcanology.

Yes I can tell. Volcanology is very cool. I just did an academic poster at my college about the moon Io and its geochemical volcanic cycles

Hello!
That's amazing you're interested in volcanology! There are several volcanology offered at Lancaster as part of the Earth and environmental science and physical geography degrees! Including a trip to Mt Etna in Sicily which I completed a few weeks ago!

Feel free to ask anymore questions about the degree and the trip!

Hi! I'm in Y12 and hoping to do geophysics! I was thinking Leeds, Durham, and Edinburgh, but Edinburgh no longer allow entry into second year so I'm now stuck between Leeds and Durham. I love maths and computing and also really love geography, especially volcanoes and Icelandic geology!

im not 100% sure yet, buttt i really like the look of the course at durhum, st andrews , oxford , and i've visited the oxford open day and they were rlly lovely.

i'm interested in a broad range of topics - tectonics, climate , natural hazards . But im a bit worried that im not passionate enough about actual rocks :0 , i definitely find some aspects of formation interesting but im not too interested in classification.

what topics interest you the most?

that sounds coool, iceland is so amazing , i got the chance to go with school and it was the best thing ever. the geothermal energy there is really interesting also, i dont know if you went to visit the geothermal plant, but they are injecting the carbon dioixde into solid iron pyrite rock through mineralisation. defintely something to check out

Omg i’m thinking of applying to those 3 as well!!

I’m really interested in planetary geology, paleontology, geobiology, volcanology and hydrogeology. I don’t think it matters much that you dont have a massive passion of actual rocks because earth sciences is SO broad. I think the best way though to gain a passion about them is to just collect them. I have a good collection building up in my bedroom lol I’m hoping to add some fossils but haven’t been successful in finding any yet😔

thats true actually, i do have a nice pile of different coloured calcite and sea glass next to my bed ;D
pretty cool that were thinking of the same places, did you say you wanted to so a joint honours ?

it sounds like u have a very wide interest, i read something cool recently (if u havent already seen it) on the planetary/ hydrology sort of lines about the origin of water on earth...

Sea glass is lovely! I have some on my window sill.
That article looks interesting, I’ll add it to my reading list!
I watched Earth on iPlayer recently, its really good for understanding the origins of life and the conditions on earth, would recommend if you haven’t seen it already.
