Anything I should be doing currently as someone who would like to study law?

Hi there, I have hopes of studying Law at Cambridge someday as I've heard it's ranked well for that. I also know that universities like if you show you are passionate about your chosen subject. I have no idea where to begin - any books/ competitions/ shows/ courses etc that would be good for me generally? Note: I have a lot of time so anything is helpful. Thanks and have a good day!

If you are passionate about a subject and have lots of time, you should be able to find out all of the books and activities usually recommended for prospective law students. Hint: try the University of Cambridge website.

If you are you just looking for recommendations that you think will tick some boxes, that is unlikely to assist you. Similarly, applying to a university just because you have heard it is well ranked is not a good idea. University rankings are of doubtful relevance outside fora such as this one.

The questions to ask yourself are: why do you wish to study law, and why at Cambridge?

Listen to Stiffy Byng's advice above!

If you're struggling to know where to begin, think about what drew you to law in the first place? If it's because you liked analysing arguments, why not philosophy? If it's because you like interpreting sources, why not history? If it's because you enjoy essay-writing and reading, why not classics?

I think a lot of people apply to study law because of its perceived prestige, because they think it's necessary to study law to be a lawyer or because they simply like the idea of studying law. Differentiate yourself from them! Don't make a decision about what you want to study before you've even researched the degrees, attended a few taster lectures, etc.

This is a list of suggestions by the Cambridge Law faculty's blog: https://medium.com/think-cambridge-law/super-curricular-activities-exploring-law-in-year-12-b7ed26e87871
Follow your interests. If you love it and decide to apply to study law, brilliant! If you realise it's not for you, equally brilliant!

Thanks so much! I'll be sure to find some books at the library as I'm really keen to know more about law.
