Question for current UAL students, internationals, and graduates

Hey everyone! I’m a high school senior from the US, trying to decide between going to Parsons in NYC or UAL pre-degree in London (looking at CSM, LCF, or Wimbledon for undergrad) for fashion design. I’m really interested in working with performers like musicians, actors, and stage artists and eventually want to design costumes for concerts, musicals, operas, movies, stuff like that, while also exploring creative/art direction in that world. I’ve always leaned toward the avant-garde side of fashion and love experimental work that ties into performance and storytelling.

Parsons has always been a dream school of mine, and I already know a lot of people in NYC. The city’s familiar, fast-paced, and full of art, music, concerts, and subcultures that I love being part of (I’m into punk/goth fashion and music especially). But lately, I’ve been seriously considering London because of how different and inspiring it seems. UAL also has a great reputation, and everyone I’ve talked to, including my fashion teacher, keeps telling me how studying in the UK could push my creativity and make me stand out more in the fashion industry. So I’m torn!

If you’re currently studying at UAL (especially CSM, LCF, or Wimbledon) or recently graduated, I’d love to hear about your experience. Some things I’ve been wondering about:

What’s the curriculum like? Is it structured or more open? Do you feel like you have creative freedom to explore personal ideas?

How intense is the workload? Is it manageable, or does it feel overwhelming?

What are the studios and facilities like? Do you get access to equipment (sewing machines, dye labs, etc.) outside of class? Do you feel supported in terms of resources?

What’s the community like-collaborative or competitive? Have you had the chance to collaborate with students in other departments like music, theatre, or fine arts?

How well does UAL prepare you for post-grad life? Do they support internships or industry connections? How do students usually go about finding work or building portfolios during the program?

If you’re an international student, how was adjusting to London? Is it hard to find internships or jobs as a non-UK citizen?

Do you feel like you’ve had enough time to actually enjoy London outside of school? I love going to punk/goth shows, thrift shopping, and visiting museums-does London have a scene for that kind of lifestyle?

If you’re at CSM, do you think it’s a good fit for someone who wants to do performance-based fashion, or is that something LCF or Wimbledon might be stronger in?

Have you or someone you know done a study abroad semester in NYC or at Parsons? Did it actually feel useful or career-boosting, or more like a short taste?

Looking back, would you choose UAL again over studying in the US?

I know this is a lot of questions, but I’d really appreciate any insight, especially from those who’ve lived it. Choosing between these two paths is hard because both are amazing in such different ways. Thanks so much in advance for your time!
