Hi,
it depends on the situation and what course you are interested in. I have attended a sixth form college but then I had to transfer because of distance and wanted to change my subject course so I chose the college closer to home. I was originally studying T-Levels Digital Production at the sixth form college then now I’m at the college I studying T-Level management. There is a sixth form right next to the college I study and I do feel a lot of my friends from school have went to the sixth form instead of the college. However, because I have been at both I can say that I feel there is a lot of support and freedom at college compared to sixth form. This might not be the case for everyone but my personal opinion on seeing the difference is you will be welcomed to share your opinions and help will be provided if needed. In a sixth form the teachers expect you to be smart and be the perfect standards but in the college they will make sure that they can help you to prepare for work and university. Another thing I’ve noticed is that during sixth form college I had to find my own work experience which was a huge struggle for me but in my college they find the work experience for us which is helpful and even prepare us to be employment ready. My suggestion is that try to see the connections your sixth form or college has with work places and universities. I’m saying this because not everyone’s experience is the same and you might not like college and prefer sixth form. However, the majority of people who I know go sixth form say that they feel as if they are still in school. The teachers are very strict and don’t offer much support they’ll expect you to be on top of the work. Sixth form you still get detentions etc. in college there is a lot of support offered for mental health and wellbeing. But again, this can also depend on which college or sixth form you go to. I’d suggest maybe if you know anyone that attends those colleges/sixth form to ask them how they feel their experiences are. If not you can look on their social media posts and see what activities take place. Maybe read reviews if there is any on twitter, instagram, LinkedIn. In my college I’ve attended a lot of trips and there’s a lot of opportunities for enrichment. I’ve made a lot of new friends in college which I never thought I would’ve made so I’m glad I transferred. Don’t pressure yourself to choose something based on influence make a choice based on your future goals, your mindset and preferences.
Hope this helps!
