Taking Leave from sixth form / self study leave

Hi,

Recently right before the easter holidays my Dad has a mini stroke and had to go to A&E, then throughout the holidays so far he’s just been constantly in and out of hospital. The hospital discharged and him and told my family we need to keep an eye on him for the following weeks / months as during this time period he’s most likely to have a full stroke.

When sixthform starts I’ll be the only (old mature enough) person that can speak english in my family that can keep an eye on my Dad, I Have older siblings however they do not live with us / will be in a different country. My dad currently has been given meds, but he still has double vision and feels dizzy very often, when he walks he needs someone to support him

I am in year 13 and was wondering if sixthform would be understanding if I took study leave (they do not give it) so that I can both study for my exams and also take care of my dad, as I’m really worried that if I go to sixthform and he has a stroke again my family (mum who can’t speak english and siblings who are very young) won’t pick up on the signs quick enough and call 999. My dads blood pressure was at 200 yet it was difficult to tell he was having a mini stroke so if it’s hard for me I can’t imagine how hard it would be for my immigrant mum with no knowledge in strokes and my younger sibling. I want to take leave when easyer holidays ends

My mum can’t speak english that much either, and when it comes to high pressure environments such as having to call 999 she’s just crap at it. She breaks down and cries, if anything she gets in the way (this is harsh but the brutal truth).

In terms of content luckily I finished all the content myself back in march, so hopefully my sixthform will be more willing to give leave. I’m also the one of the few dentistry offer holders in my college (they’re big on ppl with dentistry/ med offers as it makes them look good) and my entry requirements are ABB - I’ve never gotten grades that low. I’m predicted an A*A*A so I was thinking do you think I’ll be able to persuade my school to give time off.

This is a really hard decision for me to make, but my dad has so many health issues (brain damage, high blood pressure etc). He’s 54 and unfortunately it’s very common for people in my family to die in their 50s/60s.

Your sixth form SHOULD be understanding. You have a very strong case which should be more than enough. You've already finished all the A-level content which puts you way ahead, You're predicted AAA and most dentistry degrees require ABB or AAB, so you're good there. You've already secured an offer too, so you're fine there. Ask for a quiet meeting with a staff you're on a good terms with, tell them what's going on. Very likely they'll refer you to a head of year or someone similar and just tell them the situation you're in similar to what you said here. If possible and if you're worried they won't say yes bring some documents about hospitalizations and discharges etc.

Thank you for your reply ❤️ when the holidays end I decided I’ll call the attendence officer and my progress tutor to let them know what’s going on, hopefully it all goes well

Hi I tried speaking to my sixth form about this but they’re still incredibly stubborn on not giving me leave

My dad ended up having a full stroke a weeklater, then the stress caused my mum to go hospital and now she’s also on blood pressure medication and my brother ended up getting sent to a mental hospital (although he’s discharged now) and on top of that I’m currently on antidepressants for my mental health but all of this is making it overwhelming. I’m the only available english speaker in my family

I told them all of this and they STILL WILL NOT GIVE study leave, they send if my dad has another stroke then he should ask for an interpreter and they keep saying its in my best interest to stay at sixthform till my very last exam. They said I get good grades bcs of college so I should stay

Do you know if I can do anything, I have a gp review appointment soon about my mental health I was wondering if I should ask for a sick note from them

Yes, 100% ask for a sick note. Not only a sick note, but you should tell them what's going on and how much stress it's been causing you. See if you can ask the GP to explicitly ask the school for a reduced timetable of sorts or remote study arrangements. Legally, 6th form has to take health advice seriously.
There's also a couple other options for you, but you should research them on ur own time and decide whats best fit or if any are fit at all; Apply for a young carer assessment via your local council, Contact your exam board and request special consideration (just in case all of this might mess with your exams), Talk to a headtacher if you haven't already or maybe even governors if you're feeling unsafe, take this issue to social media.
You don't have to do any of the other options I gave you, in fact it might be best not to do any at all, it all genuinely depends on ur situation. Also if your sixth form says you do well because of us or something of the sort, remind them you finished ur content back in March and are a dentistry offer holder already. You clearly have the ability to study independently.
