applying for student finance as a care leaver

i’ve read some stuff online about how being a care leaver can support my application for student finance, but i’m not estranged from my parents (at least not both of them). is it still worth uploading evidence of my care leaver status? what exactly could it help with?

Hi there,

If you're not estranged then we would require them to support your application unless you are over 25 or have 3 years of self support prior to the start of your course. Thanks, Jason

hi, ty for the info !

just to check, does this mean it isn’t really worth mentioning that i’m a care leaver then? i have a letter from my local authority confirming i was in care both between my 14th and 16th birthdays and after my 16th birthday, but i’m not sure if uploading it would actually make a difference

Hi there,

Thank you for your response. If you have returned to the legal care of your parents before the 1st day of the 1st AY of your course, you will revert to being financially dependent on them and we'd require them to support your application to assess you for the maximum amount you're looking to apply for. Thanks, Jason
