At university, it is important to do what is best for you, and a big part of that is making sure what you study is right for you.
First, I started my journey with a Gap Year, to consider what my options going forward were - Employment? Apprenticeships? University? Study at Home? Move away from home? This Gap Year was crucial I think, and the importance of Gap Years deserves its own post!
After my Gap Year, I settled on university being the best for me, specifically Liverpool Hope University. It must be noted that I was making this decision in the aftermath/ongoing COVID pandemic. After this experience, I just wanted stability, security, and something new - to see the world and learn again.
I made the decision to take up my Psychology and International Relations offer at Liverpool Hope; I'd always had an interest in studying a combination of things! After all, I did study Psychology, History and Performing Arts in sixth form! I also had some familiarity and knowledge of Liverpool, and felt a draw to it, and Hope has a really nice campus to top it off.
Although, I went in optimistic, the combination of Psychology and International Relations wasn't for me - and that's OK - we all receive courses differently and learn what is right for us at a different pace, it's all part of the journey, and it is best to do something about it rather than bury it deep until it really becomes an issue. I discussed with my tutors what my options were, and settled on single honours Politics and International Relations, decided to start over in the new year, with all the pandemic restrictions lifted, and I never looked back!
The practical concerns of course are there, but at undergraduate you get 4 years at least of available funding, and if you swap early, then you can just continue on as you were that year. Going part time, taking a break, and deferring a year, all are options to consider too - and it’s important to communicate any concerns with your university so you know your options.
To summarise, do what is best for you now, and communicate with your university and if they are there to help, then they'll want what is best for you - and Liverpool Hope University did that for me, so much so I stuck around for my Master's degree here!
All the best wishes for the future,
Harry
