A level choices!!

Hey everyone! I’m in yr 11 atm and we’re choosing our a levels and I defo want to do geog and French but I’m stuck on a third. I’m thinking of either history/sociology/re and was wondering if anyone has any experience of these subjects or a general idea of what it’s like to study them. Also idk about history because I used to love it in yr 7-9 but now I don’t like it so much and I’m not sure whether or not to take it but yeah I’m open to anything really! Thanks

Hi, I'm in year 12 atm and I am studying classics. If you are not much into history as you were I think classics is a great option if the college you are thinking about going to offers it. From what I know it is not very similar to history but it looks at ancient history and I know that most people are more into that sort of thing. I hope you find the right subject for you!!

to be honest its good that you already have a good idea of what you want to do! Try find a subject that will link to future prospects like when u go to uni if there are any requirements or preferences

That sounds quite interesting actually, I’ll ask my teachers if classics is available although I’ve not seen it on the list for our sixth form subjects which is a shame!

I study sociology and I really enjoy it! It's really interesting because what we learn links to what we can see in the real world. If you have any specific questions about the subject, I'd be happy to answer the best I can

I take Geography, History and Sociology at A-Level and I'm currently in Year 12. I enjoy all my lessons (as you should).

For Sociology, you learn about society in general and its structure/institutions and different perspectives on society. It's really interesting. For example, today in Sociology we learnt about "is the school system institutionally racist?".

For History, the essay writing is quite difficult to get used to especially in the first few months but over time you get better and better. The content is really interesting though. (You should check what you learn about in your A-Level History course and see if you find it interesting.) I'm doing Germany 1918-1989,The Rise and Fall of Fascist Italy 1911-1946, Lancastrians and Yorkists, and Witchcraft for coursework.

Hi there, done both History and Sociology. Loved History, did not mind Sociology. History can be challenging but is actually intellectually worthwhile. Sociology, gonna be honest with you, it is so simplistic it's like it was made for 11 year olds. You will not be going deep into societal problems you will actually be remembering 50 sociologists and their opinions on different matters and then regurgitate it during the test.

Still, not stressful and rlly easy so I was not mad about the dull stuff lol!

Why aren't you enjoying history much at GCSE? What specifically do you not like about it?

Hi, I take both History and Religious Studies.

In my experience Religious Studies has been a lot easier than history so far (if you want an easier A-Level), but I would say I do find history slightly more interesting than religious studies. Might be way too early to suggest this but as someone else said it might be a good idea to look at A-Levels that link to what you might want to do as a career or at university. I think just make sure you take an A-Level that you think you will enjoy but also be really good at is key.
I also take classics and economics, I’m not that good at literature analysis so my weakest A-Level is currently Classics - do bare in mind that there is literature analysis in classics as someone did suggest it to you (it is a good A-Level, i enjoy it but I’m not exceptional at it).

Hope this helped…
