St Andrews Decisions Advice

Hey, I got into medicine for Glasgow, Edinburgh, and St Andrews. I literally never even thought of going to St Andrews and I basically applied as a filler choice. However after the open day on the 5th, Im really considering going since i loved the vibe and the course structure. I'm still just really unsure, so is anyone able to talk about their experience at St Andrews for medicine or just in general, because i always imagined myself going to a city so it's really different. Literally anything would help thanks.

I personally chose St Andrews! You get to spend time in both a rural and urban environment (for yrs 4-6), and I think you also get personal tutoring in small groups (similar to Oxbridge). You will still get to study in an Urban environment later as, from what I heard, most students later go to Edinburgh and Glasgow for their last years (for Scottish and no preference route. So, overall, you get to experience two different locations (the beach and the city). gardaute twice (once from St Andrews and once from the other university). Regardless, focusing on opportunity and personal preferences, these were the appealing factors for me to go into St Andrews! Let me know if you have any questions!

Hey I’ll try and summarise,

For the medicine part they showed us the weekly schedules so you’ll have around 10 (55 minute longs) lectures a week, some labs, and small group tutorials. We got shown the clinical skills labs, VR, and experiments done. These were all very interesting and the teaching seemed really good in my opinion. Also the medical building feels really nice, new, and up to date.

On the uni as a whole, they talked about traditions and stuff. So they have academic families where you can talk to and get help from students older than you. There’s a bunch of other stuff like the pier walk, may dip, and raisin - i’m sure youtube will have a video on all this stuff.

If you picked the 6 year Bsc course (which i did), I'm pretty sure that if you decide to you can switch to their 5 year course, If you really like it at St Andrews.

Overall i just really liked the vibe and I think that St Andrews Uni is an experience you can only get once and it’s just seems really close knit. But obviously if you really want experiences like clubbing or really enjoy city life it might not be for you.

Let me know if this was helpful 🙏🙏

Hi, this was helpful. Thank you! Do you know where the majority of students go for the last 3 years of the course? I have heard that it was Glasgow and Edinburgh, however, I am not sure if it is 100% correct. P.S. I have chosen the 6-year course as my firm choice!

Omg! I think i’m probably going to firm it as well. For the last 3 years, I’m pretty sure it’s like 40% Glasgow, 30% Edinburgh, 10% Dundee, and 10% Aberdeen.

Hi,

Could you also tell me more about the medical school? Do they have a good level of focus on surgeries as part of the course, and can you choose anything (hoping to look at biomedical engineering for the research) for the research you need to do in the 3rd year? Did they tell you whether you are still afflicted with St Andrew's after you transfer or become a full associated student of another university?
