clearing

ive got my offers for uni but i really wish i was going to a different uni. on results day i understand i can go through clearing to try get a space at this uni if i reject my offers from my firm/insurance. however i was wondering is there anyway i can still receive an informal offer over the phone WITHOUT rejecting my offers first?

so i call the uni, get the offer, then reject my previous offers?

im not sure if that would be possible but i really dont know what to do because i understand its a gamble rejecting my offers when i may not even get a new space at the uni i want.

Some Unis will refuse to talk to you if your are not officially 'in Clearing'' and you are still holding a place elsewhere. Others will make you a very informal offer and its up to you to then get the other Unis to reject in time so that you can pick up that offer - very risky. And - thats assuming that what you want is in Clearing to begin with. And remember, Clearing applicants are not usually guaranteed accommodation - in reality that means no choice about accommodation, or sometimes no accomodation at all.

I always advise people not to reply on Clearing to fix 'I didnt apply to the right Uni or subject o begin with' problems. Its a far better idea to wait until August and get your actual results, and then make a decision to go with whatever place you then have - or to dump that place, take a gap year and reapply to 5 carefully considered new choices. Far less stressful and usually better choices are made.

Hi there,

I completely agree with McGinger - usually you are able to ring up unis and get informal offers before releasing yourself into clearing, but as has been said there will be some who will not do this, so its important to be aware of this.

If I were you I'd mull over your decision for a bit and consider whether you're absolutely sure you do not want to go to any of your choices anymore or whether your doubts are coming from a fear of the unknown. If you decide that none of your choices are right for you, then that's okay. If there is something you genuinely want in clearing then this is an option for you, but you are usually able to make better decisions in the long run if you reapply in the main cycle next year to 5 new choices/courses.

So if you wish, if you don't want any of your choices you could take a gap year to work part-time, travel, volunteer, reevaluate your goals and where you want to be, then re-apply where you will not be rushed and limited for choice.

I hope this helps - best of luck with your decision 🙂
