Biology a-level

i have currently picked maths, spanish and business for a-level but after watching greys anatomy im quite interested in medicine - i dont think i would want to be surgeon or a doctor but perhaps something low down in the medicine field. I do combined science now and got 8/7 in my mocks with not much revision and really hope for 9/9. I am definitely doing spanish but i feel like bio and maths would be really hard. What can i do in medicine if i just do bio? And is bio a-level worth it? People who have done Bio help pleaseeee

bio is the worst a level ever .

btw if you want to do anything medicine related I believe you would need chem as well.

Okay thanks - for some reason i read somewhere that you didn’t necessarily need chem but i think it was lying to me after i have just done some more research! Don’t think i could do bio and chem together.

At GCSE, I did combined science as well and got an 8/8 in it so chose biology, chemistry and maths. I also originally wanted to do medicine, although idk what you can do with just bio as I wanted to be a doctor so needed those 3 plus really good GCSEs. In my opinion, biology is the best science and I have absolutely loved the past 2 years doing it. On the other hand, maths has been harder for me but that has been a combination of different factors (e.g. bad teachers, noisy class, not enough structure, etc). From my experience maths has a huge work load in comparison to bio however it is a really useful A level especially for any form of medicine. Some teachers have even said the better the grades at GCSE, the better chance at A level so keep that in mind as well (I've known people who got 6s at GCSE and have really struggled to get anything past a D, but again personal experience). Hope this helps a little and sorry I wasn't more use about the medicine bit!

Depends where in medicine- doctors and nurses I think need bio, chem and another like maths or physics but I'm sure there's other positions that don't necessarily require chemistry

Hi,I'm currently in my last year of a-levels doing Bio,chem and Spanish.Biology is not too hard if you can deal with the amount of content you'll learn and the specific mark scheme. For me I would say its one of the easier sciences because its not hard to comprehend most of the time. However if your looking to go into the medical field you might need 2 science subject like bio and maths or chem, physics and sometimes psychology.I would say maybe start thinking of what you might want to do in the future,it can always change but it can help you with knowing what subjects uni accept and the grades.

You absolutely do need Chemistry. The requirements are usually three A levels at A*-A, with Chemistry and at least one other science. So Biology is more optional

You definitely need chem more than bio, unless you want to do a biology degree and switch to medicine midway through (but no guarantees)

You do not need biology and chemistry to get into medicine. However not doing chemistry will hinder the amount of medical schools you are able to apply to. For example, if you dropped Spanish for biology and did Bio,Maths and business you would be able to get into certain medical schools ( maths would count as your “second science”) an example of one could be Manchester Med School. There are many out there look into the entry requirements individually for each medical school not from any comparison sites. You only need 4 to choose from.

Also you would need decently strong GCSE and a good UCAT. Medicine is long but full filling journey and if you are willing enough you will get there.

I initially wanted to go through the same route of Medicine. I started with Bio, Chem & Maths. I’ll be completely honest here, I hated Biology. Too much information/content to learn. No enjoyment in the subject. However, I absolutely thrived in Chemistry and Maths. I then decided to drop Biology for Further Maths and it was the best decision I could’ve made! In terms of whether you will like the subject or not is down to you. There’s a good mix of responses to this thread, some people saying they love it and some hate it. If I was you, I’d look through the specification and see if it is something you see yourself doing for the next 2 years. Also for reference, I achieved all grade 8s at GCSE so it was never down to me not being “intelligent” enough for the subject. I just hated the content I learned and it didn’t give me the spark that Chemistry and Maths gave me.
