I love that book but I'm awful at writing essays on it. Perhaps something about lydia being... oh I can't remember the word! Damn! Maybe younger and sillier, therefore not old enough for a serious marriage etc etc, as I said, I'm awful at writing essays. Trying to do one now, that's why I came on here, to procrastinate again.

You could try www.sparknotes.com. They have some P&P notes in the literature section. Maybe you could start by talking about the differences between the two marriages. Elizabeth and Darcy go from dislike to love and Lydia and Wickham are sort of the other way round. Maybe this shows Jane Austen was more cautious and realsitic in her view of marriage than women like Lydia or Mrs Bennet? Sorry this is probably not much use, but good luck!

Maybe you could start by explaining that marriage is one of the main themes in p+p + explain it's importance in the book before going on to desribe lydia/wickham + liz/darcy as examples.

i hv to write this essay about pride and prejudice but i have no idea how to start it. the title is:
"choose two couples.what do their relationships or marriages reveal about their characters and Jane Austens attitude to marriage?"
please please can anyone help me think of how to write an intro on that, im using liz and darcy as my good marriage and lydia and wickham as my bad one.
thanx

Well off the top of my head Jane Austen believes that marriage must be for love and not money- Its ironic that they people who married for money are worse off..

Liz and Darcy- had to overcome internal and external obstacles. Their characters change the most throughout.. guess you can explain that. Austen wants to portray true love and how women shouldn't do what men tell them to do.. (lol.. true feminist! )

Lydia and Wickham- Immaturity of Lydia, Greed of Wickham- based on lust

Mrs Bennet and Mr Bennet- Also lust I think.. in the early days- married for money?

Sorry everything I said is probably really obvious, their just guidlines- you'll find loads more on the net.

Dont you think by far the most interesting marriage in the book is Charlotte and Mr Collins? As you dont have to do a good/bad one why not include it? There is a very interesting conversation between Charlotte and Elizabeth about the marriage which I think shows that Jane austen does not have quite such a romantic view as the earlier post suggested. Although love was the ideal, I think she felt very strongly that it must be balanced by far more materialistic considerations! Charlotte is a very respected character in the book, more mature and worldlywise than Elizabeth and she makes a marriage of convenience. Even Elizabeth fell in love with darcy after she saw Pemberley. She does not write much at all about Mr Ds appearance and seems to think looks (at any rate for a man) not so high in order of importance. On the other hand she gives great importance to the beauty of the females, even if she refers to it rather indirectly. Both Jane and Elizabeth were able to get rich husbands, in Lizzies case also well above her station, because they were "beauties". Fair enough, she is being realistic, but a woman who goes after a man for his looks ie Lydia is suitably punished by disgrace and exile! To be fair to her Mr Bennett, who also clearly married for his wifes looks, suffers for his sins!
good luck with your essay

p& p is my fav book and its ab fab!!!!!!!1 i love it. i think ur choice of marriages is good...you can explore lydia's immature character in contrast to elizabeth's heroic wisdom and how this affects their choice of husband. basically i think ur intro should say that the relationships of the two characters reveal a lot about them, say which relationships you have chosen and how you will compare/contrast them... also dont forget to say austen shows teh social context of marriage in her time...wickhams desire for money shows how marriage was not just for love but a financial investment...etc etc. good luck! keep us posted on how u get on.

I love Pride and Prej but i've never studied it. I agree that the most interesting marriage is between Charlotte and Mr Collins. We dont get chance in the books to find out whether Lizzies marriage will be sucessful but I think the most sucessful marriage in the book is the Gardiners. Are you just using examples of the two couples? or are you focussing on them and bringing in other examples. There are plenty of examples to choose from with regards to marriage in Pride and Prej. Have you tried reading any of the followups to pride and Prej such as the ones written by Emma Tennant they might give you some ideas.

Its because her social position is below his own. The behaviour of her family etc.
His letter to her should give you some good ideas.

Wickham and Lydia married for lust. Lydia is well developed physically (the tallest of the sisters) but emotionally she is still a child. She does not understand the effect and pain her marriage is having on her family. Also you might want to comment on what society at the time thought about the marriage- about how it was frowned upon because they had sex before they got married etc. Basically Wickham was a prick and Lydia was a slut.. I'm sure theirs loads of info on the net about this.
