Uni accommodation / student finance

when should i apply? Im waiting on my last uni offer, and I’m still undecided about my firm but ik my insurance. I heard it’s a first come first kind of thing, and my friend who went to Nottingham got her 2nd choice (it’s not bad), but I’d rather have my first choice. Do i apply with my insurance, or should i just wait?

Universities are not allowed to offer accomodation on "first come, first served" basis. This is because to do so places people in exactly your position under undue pressure.

Most universities only let you apply for accomodation if they're your firm choice (although there are exceptions). However, you can't select your firm or insurance choice right now anyway, as there's that one decision still outstanding.

The thread title mentions student finance. You can apply for that now and "guess" the university you'll be at. If things change on A level results day (as they often do), just let SFE (or your region's version thereof) know, so they can update the uni to which they'll send the tuition fee.

As above, if you get any 'pressure selling' emails from any University offering you any sort of advantage or 'goodies' for going Firm, contact UCAS immediately (0371 468 0 468). This will not impact your offer - UCAS would never tell that Uni who had dobbed them in - but its important that this sort of dodgy practice stops.

Actually it may not be allowed but it is happening. Nottingham uni accommodation opened 1st April and is first come first serve. They may guarantee you’ll get a room but it may not be your choice as many of the best rooms are already allocated.

Do you also count offering a reduced a level grade offer if you firm?

Yes - if this reduced offer is offered or known about before you Firmed, its an obvious incentive to Firm.

Exeter has a very long term reputation for underhand tactics to recruit students. I can remember one year when Exeter blatantly bribed applicants with a free laptop for going Firm. And of year after year when they regularly poached Clearing applicants after they had been fully accepted by another Uni.

This should give you an idea of how mercenary Exeter is about recruitment, and their attitude towards students. Don't kid yourself that they specifically want your daughter - any bum on a seat would do. Exeter sets its entry grades high to make it look like they are 'competitive'', when clearly they will accept whatever comes through the door on Results Day. - their sense of screaming desperation in August is a running joke with other Universities..

The question your daughter needs to ask herself is, does she actually want to go to a University that has to bribe applicants to actually go there?

Damn bruh, Exeter is lowkey sneaky. What other unis are known to do this type of bribing?? I got a reduce offer from kcl and they basically told people in the open day that if u put them as ur insurance, you wouldnt have access to their booking portal and would have to do it after results day. She also said we should have like 3 options for private rental ones cuz kcl dont allow u to have ranking options for the type of accommodation, u can only choose 1. Would this be sneaky or is it normal?

I’m now thinking to firm kcl and insure Warwick even though Warwick is higher requirements since accommodation would be easier to find there then kcl. Alsooo I like the course more at kcl and the shorter distance.
