What should I particularly look out for during school visits?Look at:
How the students behave - both the ones directly in front of you and ones as you're walking around.
How the staff engage - with students, with other staff, with you.
How much of the school they actually show you - do they avoid areas such as the staff room, certain groups of students, social spaces.
I'm moving to a new role in September, my visit was after school (because there isn't the flexibility to view schools once you're a teacher) so I didn't see any students until my interview day but they were all polite, said hello/good morning etc.
Are there specific questions I should ask?I guess it depends on what you need/want to know. I'm secondary, so ask about the structure of the day, lesson timings, and extracurriculars. I ask about what is in place for staff wellbeing, and for you, as an ECT, I'd be asking about how they support your development, which ECT provider you would be with, do they have any current or new ECTs joining in September for you to connect with once there.
How do school visits work—can I request a specific time, or do schools arrange it themselves?Usually, it depends on the availability of someone to show you around and your timeframe. So, you would ring or email requesting a visit, say you're free xyz and see what times they come back with. As an ITT, your placement should let you out to visit, so you're much more flexible.
What are effective strategies for finding jobs? Also, check out other teaching job sites as well as your local borough. Here are a few.
https://www.tes.com/jobs/https://mynewterm.com/https://www.eteach.com/Some schools will have recruitment contracts with local recruitment agencies such as Hays, so they won't advertise their roles anywhere other than the agency.
LinkedIn as there are loads of recruiters on there trying to find teachers to fill spaces.
Any tips on what to do, observe, or ask during these visits would be really helpful.Go in with fully open eyes. I know you feel you're falling behind and left it too late, but don't let that be the thing that makes the decision for you. Don't feel you have to apply/accept it just because it's there. The school has to feel and be right for you. Many jump on the first one they come across because they're worried nothing else will come along, and it ends up being a mistake, and they're looking again for jobs in October.
Good luck x
