GCSE for Med

Hiya ,
Im in year 11 currently and doing gcse in the summer and I'm hoping for mostly 8s ( 1 or 2 7s ) and maybe a few 9s - However I'm really nervous because if i come out with all 7s or smth would i acc be able too still do med??? Well on paper, i can , from the research I've done but like everyone i see on here has mostly 9s and stuff, and i feel like its not possible. I'm studying as hard as i can ofc to get the best grades possible but the worst what can happen if i mess up is that my medicine dream gone.

Hey its amazing that you're already thinking ahead about this ! I'm a current year 13 prepping for a-levels with 2x medicine offers, which means i was in a similar head space as you recently. All med schools with have some sort of GCSE requirment (E.g 6x GCSE grade 6 and above, grade 6 in maths and english lang, etc) however how they are used after this will depend on the med school. For example some just make sure you have at least 6 GCSE above grade 6 and rank applicants based on predicted grades and UCAT, others work soley on GCSE rsults (e.g kent and medway), all of this depends on the general medical school. Ideally you want GCSE's which are as high as possible to make your application as competitive as possible and get as many interviews as you can. For reference I achieved 888888776, and managed to get 2 intervies and 2 offers ! Hope this helps

how many would you say base of gcse - in my recent mocks i got mostly 7s with like 2 6s - which is decent so hoping to go up 1 grade or so in most lol. I've also missed school for illness, soo idk if that helps when they look at my GCSE grades. Just nervous if i come up with ( 7s and 6s ) which are still really good results Don't get me wrong, but I just don't feel they're competitive enough.

I completely understand the concern - I felt the same. It's really hard to tell as it changes each year (very good year where lots get straight 9's, or where people struggle and get mainly 7/6's), its also worth noting that medschools don't publish info on avg student GCSES / a-levels as again it depends on the year and stduent (If a uni has a very holistic way of assessing applicants, such as keele, someone could have the bare minimum GCSES but 3x A*s predicted and a max mark UCAT and still get an interview if that makes sense. What I did to get a feel for GCSE requirmenets was scour the internet for gcse info on past interviewees / offer holders ( i mainly used past TSR threads), and try and find where you think you'd be most likley to recieve an interview. The only real thing to takeaway from this is that there really is no way to tell what a 'good' set of gcses is for medicine - your best bet is trying your absoloute very best to ge the highest grades humanly possible !
