1st University open-day!

Hi,

I'm a year 12 student and have just booked my first open day for university and I am bit unsure on what to wear for the open day? I am planning on reading Archaeology at Uni.

If anyone can give me some advice on this or on anything else they wish they knew before doing open days I would really appreciate some advice.

Wear conformable clothes and shoes - its not a fashion contest, and t-shirt and jeans etc is fine.
No-one will betaking any notice of what you have got on, promise.

General advice :

Take photos of buildings and of presentation/information slides, and keep them in a named folder for each Uni - its very easy to get muddled and confuse all the Unis.

Ask your parent - if they go with you - to take notes in the subject presentations so that you can just listen.

Sign up for at least two different subject presentations. You might find another subject that actually appeals more.

Take a coat/umbrella just in case and wear trainers or other comfortable shoes - there is always lots of walking about!

Don't obsess about 'seeing all the accommodation'. There are far more important things to look at, and think about.

Talk to current students. Ask them what they like about being at that Uni.

Admissions staff will be able to answer any 'what do you look for in an application' type questions - and remember, you can always phone/email them later if there is something you forgot to ask on the day.

Look at the town / city - walk around or take a hop-on bus tour, and think about the reality of living there.

Hi CJ,

Thanks for reaching out and great to hear you've booked onto an open day!

There is no dress code really - just wear something that's presentable but comfortable and that you'd be happy walking round in for the day.

My top tips/things I'd advise when going to an open day are...

Bring with you a list of questions - you'll be able to meet some wonderful students and academics who will be able to give you advice on anything you want to know, so it would be good to come prepared

Bring a tote bag - you're likely to accrue a small collection of leaflets and guides - carrying them in a bag beats carrying them around with you!

Bring a back up lunch in case the cafes are really crowded - the uni campus always lights up on an open day and I'm confident you'll find the environment a really nice, lively vibe - but lively vibes do mean quite a busy day and so I'd bring something to eat in case the queues in the cafes are really long!

Book onto the talks you want to go to (especially the admissions one if your uni have one!) - these are a great way to learn more about specific parts of uni you're interested in.

Have fun! take in the uni's atmosphere, talk to as many student ambassadors as you can, try to visualise yourself as a student here - do you feel at home? can you see yourself happy here?

Open days are a fantastic way to get a feel for a place and whether its for you. I hope some of this helps but please post away if you have any more questions!

Hello CJ,

For Open days, you can normally wear what you want so casual clothing is fine. In terms of what to do in the open day , you might find it helpful to make notes, speak to current students and course lecturers, see who else might be in your course etc

Hope this helps,

Open days are casual events. Just dress whatever comfortable.

see who else might be in your course
Meaning what - size up the talent, make a decision about what degree course to take purely on the basis of some other random person who you saw at an Open day?

Meaning interact with potential students and build connections. It's not something that you should be basing your uni decision on but it's something that you can take advantage of (meeting other students at the open day).
