University of Birmingham - general queries surrounding social life

Hi! I recently got an offer from UoB for human sciences (2025 entry) after applying through UCAS extra as I decided I didn't want to do the courses I had previously gotten offers for. However I have never visited UoB and can't find much information about student opinion surrounding night life and accommodation.
With the 5 unis I had gotten offers from before I had visited the cities and knew what they had to offer. Nightlife and social scene is super important to me, because I'm really hoping to find a place I feel I belong at uni. So part of me is nervous about going to a uni where I haven't been able to observe the type of people and activities that are there. I can come across as quite shy but I love a party, some DnB and jungle music and a general good time. Are there people similar to me at UoB? If so what accommodation would be best for me to look into? and are the clubs in Birmingham good?!

I can’t say much about nightlife as I’m not sure but I just know the campus at uob is amazing! The students I spoke to also said the social side of it is really good and it’s because it’s so big you are bound to find your people- they literally have a society for everything. You could look on the student union website and see if there’s anything you fancy then potentially email them about their experiences?

Accom wise, the vale was recommended to me for the social side of things but prichatts for the quieter side

Thank you so much! I just looked at the Vale and it does look pretty decent actually, I'm just hoping I'm not too late with accommodation applications to get into a place I like aha!

I was also looking at the wrong place for their societies so thank god you pointed me in the right direction 😀

No prob!! I’ve got an offer for medicine but am unsure whether to firm it still.
The vale seems so nice but I think if I go then I’ll try get prichatts as it’s closer and I’m so lazy haha!!

There’s so many societies, I would recommend looking at their instagrams (most of them have a page) to see what they get up to etc. I’m reached out to a few people and they’ve all been super helpful and happy to answer any questions

Hey, I totally get your concern, finding the right vibe socially is a big part of enjoying uni life. I felt the same when i came here as a International student. The great news is you will definitely find your crowd at Birmingham. 🙂 I have seen my friends telling me about digbeth is the place for underground vibes, especially DnB and jungle, whereas Broad Street is more mainstream things like clubs, bars etc.. But Don’t overlook Selly Oak either! It’s the main student neighborhood right by campus and has chilled bars, pubs, karaoke spots and late-night eats. The vibe is super lively, especially in the evenings, and it's always buzzing with students. This area can be one of your accomodation choices. So good luck with your decision

Thank you so much! It's so helpful to get an insiders opinion, I've heard the student bar in Selly Oak is good as well so I've been looking into the housing there as well!

Anytime 🙂 and oh yes, the student bar in Selly is great..If you get a chance, definitely check out Joe’s Bar on campus too, which of course is part of the Guild of Students and super popular for chilled evenings, pub quizzes and also amazing themed nights. Great place to meet people without the full on club scene! 🙂 hope to see you soon!

Buddy, I am living in Selly Oak as an international postgrad student, and overall it’s been a pretty good experience. Honestly I don't have a single negative aspect to share. I love Selly, period.
It’s super close to campus, full of students, and everything you need is nearby, grocery shops, cafés, takeaways, etc. It’s got a lively, student-friendly vibe and feels very connected to uni life.
That said, if you’re unsure or want a more structured setup for your first year, university accommodation is a great option too. It’s managed, secure and gives you a chance to meet lots of people right away. You can always move to Selly later once you’re more settled. 😃

Hey, and congratulations on your offer. Birmingham has a vibrant and diverse nightlife scene. Popular venues among students include Lab11, known for its warehouse-style raves; The Mill, with its rooftop terrace and guest DJs; Snobs, a long-standing student favourite with multiple floors and affordable drinks; and PST, which leans toward underground reggae, jungle, and dub sounds. The city has a large and varied student population, so whether you’re naturally outgoing or take a bit more time to warm up socially, you’ll likely find your people through freshers events, societies, and shared accommodation.

When it comes to accommodation with a strong social atmosphere, a few options stand out. The Vale Village, particularly Maple Bank or Tennis Court, is a great choice if you’re looking for a scenic, lively environment that’s popular with first-year students. Selly Oak Village, including places like Jarratt Hall, is closer to campus and the city’s nightlife, offering a more independent feel while still being sociable. Pritchatts Park offers a quieter setting but still has a good community feel and is well-situated. If you’re looking for ensuite accommodation that strikes a balance between fun and relaxation, Elgar Court at the Vale or Jarratt Hall might suit you well. The student community at Birmingham is incredibly diverse, so whether your thing is nights out, open mic nights, or just relaxed evenings with housemates, you’re very likely to find your crowd.
