Hi! I’m an A-level student planning to apply for English at Cambridge in December. I do English Literature, Sociology and History (predicted A*A*A*) and an EPQ. I don't go to a private school.
In terms of colleges, I’m stuck between Christ’s and Peterhouse. I’m not too picky, as I figure no matter where I go I'll still be doing the subject I love if I get in, so it's not that big of a deal. From what I can tell, both are about the size I want (not too large), pretty, central and not rated too lowly academically.
Initially I was aiming at Peterhouse- I liked how old it was, the size and my favourite comedian went there. However, I read it has a reputation of being conservative and cliquey, having a private-school feel/student body (the state/private school split is worse than Christ’s) and possibly being a bit of a boys club (though this doesn't seem to be reflected in the statistics) all things I want to avoid.
However, I also heard it has a vibrant queer community, which seems very appealing, especially given queer literature is one of the genres I find most interesting, and would probably touch on this in my personal statement.
Recently, I attended a visit day at Christ’s: I really liked it, as the staff were incredibly friendly and inclusive. I hadn’t considered it before visiting, but now I’m debating applying there instead of Peterhouse- I like the way they describe the English course slightly more on the website (though only marginally), and think I would enjoy their very academic approach. They seemed friendlier than Peterhouse, which I liked.
However, I am concerned that any impressions I made on the taster day will carry through to my application- I am someone who tends to overthink social interactions and although nothing necessarily went wrong on the day, Im finding it difficult to keep from from stressing that something I said will have in some way affected how they saw me. Is this a completely useless train of thought, or will a possible positive/negative impression on the admissions team affect my application in any way?
Finally, from the practical perspective I find difficult to avoid Peterhouse’s application success rate for applicants is significantly higher- 41% compared to 29% for Christs. Whilst I am aware the pooling system is designed to prevent bias here and Christs does add more applicants to the pool to compensate for this, a part of me thinks that as the English course seems wonderful for both and I like attributes of both colleges that I should take the ‘safer’ option as a more prudent choice and apply to Peterhouse.
My question is, therefore, if anyone has any advice on this or has any personal experience with wither? Additionally, is the English course for either of them known to be distinct or sub-optimal in a way I haven’t mentioned/found out about yet?
I’m aware this might seem like too much detail/thought but I enjoy thinking decisions through to the last detail and often find writing down my worries helps me think them through! I’d love some honest advice if anyone has any to offer.
Thanks so so much for any help and have a lovely day/night!
