12 GCSE's - Too much?

Hi everyone!
I'm currently in year 10 and I have lots of exams after easter, most of them mocks but I'm also taking an early entry Italian GCSE because my mum made me. My current subjects and target grades are:
Bio - 9
Chem - 9
ICT - 9
Maths - 9
Textiles - 8/9
Spanish - 8
Physics - 9
RE - 8/9
English - 8

My school offers Further Maths for people in top set in year 11 but is 12 GCSE's too much? I don't want to reach burnout and i looked it up and only 0.1% of the country take 12. Will this give me and advantage in getting into 6th form or does it not really have an impact. My A-level choices at the moment and Physics, Chemistry, Maths and maybe Further Maths but I'm not sure yet.
Hope anyone can give me some advice, especially someone who took 12 gcse's.
have a great day x

hii i'm in y12 and i was in a similar position last year where i was doing 11 gcses and had the option to do a 12th - further maths. I think it depends on your personal situation because in general i wouldn't recommend doing too many as having more gcses won't benefit you and its more important to focus on getting good grades on the important subjects that your taking for alevel than the amount of grades.

In the end, i didnt end up taking further maths gcse as for me it was too much work and extra stress but I will say that now doing alevel further maths half the class has dropped out and it is very intense and fast paced so your expected to pick up content quickly. Most people in my class did do further at gcse so at the start i found it harder than others to keep up as it used quite a bit of gcse further knowledge which my teachers only briefly covered. However i woudn't let this discourage you as despite not doing further its still very much possible to keep up just means you have to put in bit more extra work at the start but everyone will be advantaged / disadvantaged in some way e.g doing physics will help you in mechanics which you'll find a lot easier than those who don't. Also as its the knowledge itself of further maths gcse rather than the qualification thats important you always have the option of just briefly learning the content before y12 starts.

I am in y10 doing 12 (with the 12th being fm) and personally I find it quite a lot of work (but 2 of my GCSEs are out of school so that takes up time) but i don't think fm adds much in terms of workload but maths is my best subject and I've always found it easy so I think it depends on whether you enjoy maths (which I assume you do based on your a level choices). also if it got too much it wouldn't be a big deal to drop FM GCSE since you'd still have maths. good luck with your Italian this year!

Hi, I did 12 including 2 coursework subjects (which was hell) and it was pretty manageable, I got 10 9s, an 8 and a 7. I know two people who did 13 GCSEs and got all 9s!

i would say so, but i know ppl who are taking 12-13 gcses since one of my best friends is doing 13 gcses 😭 he did two early and got a 9 (computer science) and an 8 (religious studies)
rn he's taking eng lit, eng lang, maths, further maths, biology, chemistry, physics, spanish, mandarin, history and economics
he's also predicted all 8s and 9s.. i pray for both of ur sanities
u both seem similar in where ur standing at academically, id say go for it if you enjoy it. nothing is too much when you defo have the ability to achieve it. he seems to be coping well, he has good time management and i cant stress enough how important that is
but in terms of sixth form, it wont affect ur chances of getting in at all tbf, for my sixth for u just need to achieve the requirements for ur subjects to get in (in my case, a 6 for maths to study psychology and 7s to study sciences)

i would have also taken 12 gcses this year, but i dropped further maths as I wasn't very good at maths itself lol (grade 6)

I did 10 in high school and 1 in sixth form college (just as an extra subject to fill my timetable). I can't really remember if I found them hard, it was a long time ago.

My daughter did 8 and had exactly the same opportunities I did. She did her A Levels at exactly the same sixth form college that I attended myself.

I wouldn't take FMaths level 2 [it's not a GCSE] - it's not needed and might detract from aiming for top grades across all your subjects. I teach Maths and we don't teach it now but prefer to teach all the grade 9 material in detail and do enrichment topics. We also set A level prep work for the summer.

If a student who has done FMaths joins our A level group they don't seem to have an advantage over our own students.

I'd do further maths if I were you, or at least try it - I'm y11 now, taken 4 gcses early (all 9s) and taking 13 more this summer and can say further maths is really not that hard compared to other subjects. However, do be wary of your time management - you need to be organised/disciplined if you take more subjects and willing to put in extra work, so if you think that'd be a problem I'd say skip it and work on boosting your other grades

I did 13 and got all 9s but then again my school split them across y9, y10 and y11

it depends what grades you're going to get. if you can take 12 subjects and get straight 9's then you will become very desirable for colleges. but if you take 12 subjects and only get 7's, then you're less desirable and you put yourself through the extra stress for nothing. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO TAKE FEWER SUBJECTS AND GET STRAIGHT 9'S THAN TO DO MORE SUBJECTS AND PERFORM WORSE.

I’m in Y11 and doing 12 subjects. I wouldn’t say it’s too much but you do have to be good at organising your time.
I would also consider your current grades, would an extra gcse be worth it if it brought your other grades down due to lack of time? If you are looking at 8/9 for everything comfortably already then give it a go. Ultimately I don’t think it matters too much how many you do as long as you do 8 as the few Unis that look at GCSE’s only look at top 8 anyway. Doing a couple more gives you wiggle room incase you mess up but also means you have less time to study the original 8. I know I’d have lots more time if I only did 10 but my school makes everyone do 11/12
