Hello, everyone! 😊
My name is Nally, and I am a second-year student in Media, Communications and Sociology at City St George’s, University of London. I will be sharing my experience with assignment deadlines and extensions at City, as well as in universities in general. While my experience comes from being a student at City, many other UK universities may have similar requirements.
At most universities, coursework deadlines are strict, and late submissions often result in grade penalties or even a failure, depending on how late they are. The grade may be capped (e.g: reduced by a certain percentage) or marked as a failure if it’s too late. If students need more time for valid reasons, like illness or personal issues, they can request a short extension through their department.
At City St George’s, University of London, late submissions without an approved extension may be capped or failed, depending on how late they are. Short extension at City provides up to one week from the original deadline and the extension request must be received on or before the day of the assessment deadline. For more serious and long-term situations, students can apply for extenuating circumstances (ECs). By applying for an EC, that means the student is applying for a deferment of the assessment to the next available assessment period.
If you're struggling, it's always best to talk to your tutor or student support early!
