Supercurricular for MFL

I'm trying to think of things to do to put on my personal statement. I want to study languages French, Spanish, and Chinese. Is there advice on what I can do supercurricular wise to include on a personal statement.

Entering translating/mfl writing competitions is a good idea. Oxford has a list here: https://www.mod-langs.ox.ac.uk/schools-liaison-and-outreach/language-competitions , so does the Association for Language Learning: https://www.all-languages.org.uk/news-events/challenges-and-competitions/ , and so does the Association of School-Based Teacher Trainers: https://www.nasbtt.org.uk/competitions-in-mfl/ .

You could also get work experience by helping out a mfl teacher at your school/a local school. You could email any local translating charities/organisations and ask them for work experience, too.

Reading books, listening to podcasts and music, watching TV shows, films, and documentaries about language learning/in the mfl you're interested in is also a super easy supercurricular.

I hope this helps, and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask me. 😊

Hi,

Some universities offer summer schools, which are fantastic opportunities to experience university-level learning through lectures and interactive sessions. Mentioning these in your personal statement is a great way to demonstrate academic curiosity and reflect on topics you’ve explored.

SOAS will be hosting a Year 10 Summer School soon, and the "Culture and Power Voyage" pathway includes sessions led by their Languages department. You can find more details here: https://www.soas.ac.uk/about/event/year-10-outreach-summer-school-2025

I hope this helps!!
