Hi MeteB,

Congratulations on your offer from both universities!

I'm a current PhD student at the University of Exeter, and have absolutely loved my time studying here (all the way from undergrad, through Masters, and now halfway through my PhD). Picking which university to go to can be a difficult task, so I'd encourage you to consider all parts of the university experience, but ultimately there is no 'right' or 'wrong' decision, only the university and course that is the best fit for you.

I'd break this choice down to try and compare the universities firstly on the structure and quality of the course, and how it fits your interests, and then the overall student experience or lifestyle offered at each city/campus. For the course, how do the offered modules align with topics that you are most interested in, as both universities are involved in research, what the academics at each institution research will directly inform what they teach, and so the course content and structure could be quite different at each. How much flexibility is there in the course, are there any extra opportunities like the chance to study abroad, do a year in industry, learn a language or take interesting modules from other departments? What are the career prospects and industry links like at each university, do they offer internships or support with career development, what do the graduate outcomes look like for former students of the course?

For the second component about student experience and lifestyle, which city would you live in? There might be quite a difference living in the East Midlands vs the South West (I'm originally from the Midlands so know a bit about this contrast having experienced it myself!). Loughborough is a medium sized town, but connected to other nearby cities like Nottingham and Leicester. Exeter is a small sized city (about twice the population of Loughborough), but close to lots of great beaches and countryside like Dartmoor and Exmoor. How important is being close to home or travel links? Loughborough would be close to East Midlands airport for example, is that important to you? Both universities have a good reputation for sports, how important is the extra-curricular opportunities available at each campus to you?

If possible, I'd recommend you to visit each university at an open day, as then you'll really get a feel for the campus, course, but also the surrounding town/city too, and you'll better be able to decide which is the best fit for you. In the meantime, you might also want to use our chat service here to talk to a current Business and Management student at Exeter. Talking to current students who were once in your shoes making similar decisions is a really invaluable way to gain insight into what it's like to be a student at each university, and to decide which choice is best for you.

I hope that's helpful, and given you some things to think about when evaluating each course. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Hey there 😃

Many congratulations on your offers! 🥳

I know how difficult and stressful it can be to choose the right university - it’s such a big decision! 😵*💫 But if you can, I highly recommend attending Open Days. They give you the clearest possible picture of what a university is really like and are the best way to feel out whether it could become a second home for you 🏡✨

Another crucial step is to identify what truly matters to you in your university experience. Academic excellence is important, but there’s so much more to this journey! What excites you the most - societies, career opportunities, location, sports, or something else? Once you figure that out, try to research which universities excel in those specific areas.

And most importantly, remember that this is YOUR journey 🛤️ Everyone’s university experience is unique, shaped by their own expectations and priorities. So focus on what matters to YOU, and you’ll find the right fit 💙

I hope it will be helpful 💪 Feel free to reach out if you have any questions 😉 You can also chat with me or other students directly through The Ambassador Platform.

Take care,

Hi MeteB,

Congratulations on your offers! In terms of choosing between the two, it may be helpful to write a list of pros and cons for each university based on important factors to you and compare them. It might include which degree has more modules that you find interesting/relevant, the reputation/ranking of the university and degree itself, the location and facilities available, transport links, accommodation types, graduate expectations, and more. Also, speaking with current students online or at open days may help you get a better understanding of student life at the university, for example, in terms of societies, ease of travel etc. At the end of the day, what's important is that you're happy with your choice.

Best of wishes to you,
