Hospital Work Experience

Hii!

I have work experience in the paediatrics department of a hospital soon. Is there anything anyone can recommend for me to do/ know before I go? Is there anything I should preferably know before my first day? Anything will help )

Thanks in Advance

I won't have my work experience till summer, but i can tell you what I'm thinking of doing if that helps???

My plan is

Ive got a sheet ( used chat gpt ) that Imma fill out while there / after each day of things i did and questions like - what i learnt - something interesting that happened - how nurses and doctors worked together - questions i asked etc

This is useful bc when your looking back for your statement, there's stuff to write abt

Personally I'm on some care of the elderly ward with a doctor lol, but I've watched a few videos and things just so i got a better understanding of what a doctor's life would be like then.

I think you should also make a list of some questions you want to ask as well, abt the speciality/med school and things

Also, whilst you're there I'd ask to spend some time with nurses/pharmacist just there allied health care professionals. This is good as it shows you understand everyone's role in a patient's treatment.

Dm if u need anymore help!

Keep a detailed record/diary that you fill in after every day as you won't remember it all.

Having some prepared questions or things to ask about or find out about is a good idea because it's easy to be overwhelmed if you haven't been in a busy hospital type environment before.

Try to consider encounters from the view of the patient as much as you can. Reflecting on this will be useful for medical interviews.

Also try to see patients at the start of their journey in the system and through to the end as they are discharged. Consider the sort of activities that might occur whilst they are an inpatient and the resources used for each.

Also consider, what's good/positive about what is happening to the patient today/right now? Could anything be improved? Are they communicated with enough? Do they understand what is going on? If you get a chance to speak with them directly, ask them about their experiences. One of the questions I would often ask was to check if they were satisfied with their care at this point. In the main people are but they may have areas which weren't so great, ask about how long their wait for the ambulance was (if applicable).
